Dr. Johnson,
I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in becoming the next Athletic Director of Bexley City
Schools. Although this would be my first administrative role, I am confident that my numerous years and
experiences as an educator would serve me well in this particular position.
Upon completing my undergraduate studies at Miami University in 2004, I accepted a position at Upper
Arlington High School, where I have been teaching English, and serving as a grade level coordinator, for the
past eight years. Since beginning my career in education, I have earned a M.A. in Educational
Administration from The Ohio State University (2007) and National Board Certification (2008). The
rigorous and prestigious program at Ohio State has left me with not only a solid understanding of how
schools function, but also of the best qualities of a successful leader.
Although my education has provided an unparalleled foundation, it is my extensive experience in school
athletics that makes me confident that I would excel as an Athletics Administrator. Although I am still
relatively young in my career, I have coached a total of 19 athletic seasons: 11 basketball, 4 track, 4 golf.
Coaching at every level (7th grade – Varsity) has granted me the ability to form a detailed vision of how to
scaffold an athletics program to best serve growing athletes. In addition, coaching a variety of different
sports has allowed me to understand and appreciate the diverse needs of different groups within a
comprehensive school athletic program. Furthermore, my work as a head varsity basketball coach has given
me valuable administrative experiences, such as organizing tournaments and leagues, contracting and
evaluating officials, accessing resources provided by the OHSAA, submitting paperwork for post-season
tournaments, building a season schedule, setting a “vision” for a program, scheduling transportation, and
making sure that the members of my staff are up-to-date with certifications (such as CPR and Pupil Activity
Permits, etc.).
I have attached a brief outline of my core beliefs as an introduction to my educational/administrative
convictions. I hope that we will be able to get together soon to discuss my philosophies in greater detail.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

My Vision for the Bexley Athletic Program:
With a focus on high participation, athletic success, and character development, Bexley Schools will stand out as one
of the premier programs and communities in the State of Ohio.
My Core Beliefs:

Athletics builds kids of great character who will be successful in all aspects of life. Young athletes need to
understand that “it is all about the approach,” and that the accomplishments they achieve—in any aspect of
their lives—are usually a direct result of the level of effort and passion that they display. As a result of
learning how to invest in a team goal/concept, push themselves to their maximum potential, and
overcome/grow from adversity, kids will understand how to experience success in other areas of their lives,
such as school, work, and relationships.

100% student participation, in some capacity, is the goal. Even if a kid is not gifted athletically, he or she
should still have the opportunity to experience/contribute to the team’s success (pep band, student-led cheering
section, team manager/statistician, pep rally planning/participation, etc.). We are a community filled with
pride.

A strong administrator will always ask, “Is this best for kids,” when making any important decision.

Communication, collaboration, and respect (between players, coaches, other building administrators, parents,
boosters, etc.) are essential to successful management of a program. As a community, we should work as a
team.

Athletics can enormously impact school culture and community pride. An excellent athletic administrator
must generate and sustain an excitement about the program within the school and community.

All players are student-athletes, meaning that academics come first. No pass, no play.

Players, coaches, and administrators must represent their school and teams with pride and class. This includes
the way we dress, carry ourselves, and interact with others, during and after competitions. We show respect for
others (teachers, parents, peers, opponents, etc.) and are good citizens and people.

Winning is important, but it isn’t everything. We pride ourselves on competing to the best of our abilities,
with tremendous effort, passion, and class. We leave everything out there, aiming to have no regrets. Our
goal is to inspire people by the way we play.

Passion and enthusiasm are contagious. By achieving incremental goals, promoting a team concept of
mutually shared success, and having fun while working hard, players will develop an authentic passion for the
game that will fuel success.

All players are important, and every kid will have an opportunity to contribute to the team’s success. It is a
coach’s job to clearly identify each player’s strengths and communicate with each player as to how he/she can
best use his/her assets to help the team.
