Heart Technology Technology in Health Care TheaPauline de Guzman Health Care and Dynamics Cardiac Care: Yesterday Today Tomorrow Yesterday: Magnetic Resonance Imagining: What is an MRI? The MRI scanner is based on the usage of magnetic and radio waves that creates pictures of tissues, organs and other structures within the body, which is then shown on a computer. Today: DaVinci Robotic Heart What is the DaVinci Robotic Heart? The DaVinci Robotic Heart is used for heart related surgeries. One example is to repair the mitral valve where the blood is held. The surgery will allow the regulation of blood flow through the heart. This robot will ensure a safer way of incision and results. Step by Step of the Procedure: The procedure starts of a smaller incision in the heart. This will limit the side effects of the body and less trauma. As the procedure runs, the lens is put into the body to see the image clearly. There is a detector unit where it picks up the signals of the surgeon’s sensors and it directs the robot. To activate the robot, the pedal is used. Lastly, as the movement begins, the image is shown through the television. History of MRI MRI was discovered during the 1930s with the knowledge of the nuclear magnetic resonance. NMR shows radio waves that causes the atoms to give radio signals. Peter Mansfield then researched and made it possible to develop the imaging technique. Tomorrow: Abbott i-STAT System What is an Abbott i-STAT system? The Abbott i-Stat system provides test results at the patient’s bedside in minutes, which accelerates the diagnosis of people who are having chest pain and other symptoms of heart attack. I chose this because there are so many people in the whole world who are suffering from a type of heart attack. Most victims do not make it because it takes too long to diagnose the patient. In this system, it allows patients to be cured as soon as possible.
