Notes on Stewart Andrews Images
Stewie has been diving for over 27 years and diving deep (below 60 metres) for half of that, thanks to closed-circuit rebreather technology. He
has dived with the top UK and Irish teams. He has dived many wrecks such as RMS Lusitania on the south coast of Ireland – however, he
keeps returning to the WWI and WWII wrecks off Donegal, where he has been actively involved in finding and diving many new wrecks with his
buddies in what is loosely known as ‘Team A’.
Stewie has been involved in many 'first' dives on wrecks such as HMS Curacoa (125m), HMS Carinthia (115m), RMS Amazon (117m), SS
Flavia (105m), HMS Viknor (86m), as well as some very deep dives such as SS Assyria (140m) and RMS Empress of Britain (163m). He has
been involved in several TV documentaries and has been on both sides of the video camera. In 2014, he took up the challenge of deep wreck
still photography – so all these photographs were taken in 2014.
U2511 (67m)
The conning tower of the WWII German U-Boat U-2511. It is 26km NW of Malin Head in 67m of water and was disposed of on 7 January 1946
as part of Operation Deadlight, having been held in Lisahally in Northern Ireland.
U-2511 was known as a Type XXI Electro-Boat and was the birth of the modern submarine, as we know it. She could remain submerged as
long as fuel and food allowed. In command was the U-Boat Ace Korvettenkapitan Adalbert Schnee.
The astonishing thing about this U-Boat is that she was the only operational Type XXI U-Boat to make it into active service, albeit for just a few
days, before the ceasefire was called. If more of these technically advanced submarines had been in active service, the course of the war in the
Atlantic might have been very different.
HMS Audacious (64m)
This King George V-class, super-dreadnought battleship was sunk near the beginning of WWI by a low-cost mine laid by the German liner SS
Berlin. She is in 64 metres of water, about 25km north-west of Malin Head, Donegal and is a very popular wreck for budding deep divers.
During times of windy weather, she remains the ‘fall-back’ wreck when dives further offshore are impossible.
This shot is of diver Brian Kelly, who spent his entire dive posing for two photographers. He is inside an armour-plated barbette which held two
13.5 inch guns inside a rotating turret. Audacious had ten such guns and sixteen 4 inch guns and was the most complicated, most expensive
machine made by man at that time.
HMS Viknor (86m)
Built in 1888 with the finest materials available, the ship ‘Atrato’ was originally owned by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. She went on to
become the pleasure cruising ship ‘Viking’ and was requisitioned by the British Admiralty in 1914 to become HMS Viknor.

She formed part of the 10 Cruiser Squadron, which patrolled the waters of the NE Atlantic. She is believed to have struck a mine while
returning from a patrol. She sank on 13 January 1915 about 18km west of Tory Island, Donegal, with the loss of all 295 hands and without
sending a distress signal.
In the image of the stern of the ship, diver Barry McGill is dwarfed by the impressive bronze propellor and steel rudder.
HMS Hurst Castle (68m)
The HMS Hurst Castle was torpedoed by a German submarine in 1944, about 20km north of Tory Island. After many years searching, skipper
Michael McVeigh of MV Rosguill located the wreck of this WWII British corvette on 23 October 2011.
Diver Barry McGill dived her that day and confirmed the find when he saw the ‘Squid Launcher’ – a forward-facing anti-submarine mortar firing
device. This technology helped to speed up the end of the Battle of the Atlantic as it changed the U-Boat kill rate from less than 5% to almost
50% by firing Squid mortars ahead, as the attacking ship followed the submarine. This proved far more effective than the old method of
dropping depth charges off the back of a destroyer (as usually seen on film).
In the first image, diver Stephen McMullan shines his light on the Squid Launcher, and in the second he illuminates the starboard anchor near
the bow with its distinctive fairlead.
