Virtual tourists will discover how Boise citizens shaped the arid highdesert environment by combining entrepreneurial spirit and unique cultural traditions to shape Boise into a thriving, albeit isolated, western city. Use the historical, social, cultural and environmental contexts of the Boise community as the inspiration for influencing artistic expression. Must Do: Use the information found on page 1, from the Boise City Department of Arts and History to identify a category (Enterprise, Environment, Community) that you would like to create an image to represent through a relief print. Identify a subcategory (Example: Community- Public Art). Go to the website: http://www.boiseartsandhistory.org/history/remnants-of-boise-tour/ to find information or the Internet to search for facts (history) related to the image you are going to create. Once you have found an area of interest and conducted research, you will create a composition (a drawing that will be transferred into a relief print) that will be printed to symbolize Boise culture. Graded Written Component of Learning Target #1: Type a half page artist statement (2 paragraphs maximum). Must be typed, proofread and error free. This will accompany your relief print and both will be hung as a permanent display in the school. TITLE: Category- Title-(What your print is an image of?) (Example)- Community: Public Art Piece Paragraph 1- Present the historical/cultural facts about your composition. What, why and how does it represent our Boise community? Give the person that will read your artist statement a good understanding about the history and relevant information about the composition. Pretend that you are introducing the information to someone visiting Boise for the first time. Select and apply media (printmaking), techniques, and processes effectively and with artistic intention Graded Performance Component of Learning Target #2: Must Do: Create a jigsaw relief print based on an image inspired by one of the categories on sheet 1. Your composition (drawing) should utilize the entire foam sheet. You will be cutting 2 shapes out of your print that you want to be the focal point. You will be printing on black paper with your primary image being printed with white ink. The 2 shapes you cut away will be printed with 2 different colors of your choosing to create a focal point and provide contrast. You may want to print your image before you deconstruct it or print a second one for yourself. ***Composition (Drawing) requirements- Must utilize entire Styrofoam sheet for drawing. Will be an image that reflects an aspect of Boise living and culture. Interest will be added to your plate with texture (hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and shading, pattern).
