Summative Assessment Printmaking Unit
Due Date: M/W Classes- Monday, June 1st
T/TH Classes- Tuesday, June 2nd
Learning Target #1 to be assessed: HISTORICAL (WRITTEN ARTIST STATEMENT)
Examine the historical and cultural contexts of the visual arts.

Use the historical, social, cultural and environmental contexts of the Boise community as the
inspiration for influencing artistic expression.
Must Do:
Use the information found on page 1, from the Boise City Department of Arts and History to identify a category
(Enterprise, Environment, Community) that you would like to create an image to represent through a relief print.
Identify a subcategory (Example: Community- Public Art).
Go to the website: http://www.boiseartsandhistory.org/history/remnants-of-boise-tour/ to find information or the
Internet to search for facts (history) related to the image you are going to create.
Once you have found an area of interest and conducted research, you will create a composition (a drawing that will be
transferred into a relief print) that will be printed to symbolize Boise culture.
Graded Written Component of Learning Target #1:
Type a half page artist statement (2 paragraphs maximum). Must be typed, proofread and error free. This will
accompany your relief print and both will be hung as a permanent display in the school.
TITLE: Category- Title-(What your print is an image of?)
(Example)- Community: Public Art Piece
Paragraph 1- Present the historical/cultural facts about your composition. What, why and how does it represent our
Boise community? Give the person that will read your artist statement a good understanding about the history and
relevant information about the composition. Pretend that you are introducing the information to someone visiting
Boise for the first time. Cite any sources where you find facts or information.
***** Cite source of where you found facts or information after paragraph 2. If you are missing this information or
title you will receive a developing score. http://www.easybib.com/
Paragraph 2- Artistic Choices. Discuss your artistic choices in constructing your composition. What is the image,
objects you choose to draw? How is it drawn, what are the design elements (abstracted, cropped, zoomed in, scale for
emphasis, texture)? What shapes (objects) did you choose to emphasize through color to become the focal point and
why? What artistic choice did you make to create interest through details like texture?

Learning Target #2 to be assessed: PERFORMANCE (Jigsaw Relief Print)
Demonstrate skills essential to the visual arts.

Select and apply media (printmaking), techniques, and processes effectively and with artistic intention
Graded Performance Component of Learning Target #2:
Must Do: Create a jigsaw relief print based on an image inspired by one of the categories on sheet 1. Your
composition (drawing) should utilize the entire foam sheet. You will be cutting 2 shapes out of your print that
you want to be the focal point. You will be printing on black paper with your primary image being printed
with white ink. The 2 shapes you cut away will be printed with 2 different colors of your choosing to create a
focal point and provide contrast. You may want to print your image before you deconstruct it or print a
second one for yourself.
***Composition (Drawing) requirements- Must utilize entire Styrofoam sheet for drawing. Will be an image
that reflects an aspect of Boise living and culture. Interest will be added to your plate with texture (hatching,
cross-hatching, stippling and shading, pattern).
