Cavendish Hospital, Buxton Outpatient placements including combined placements at either New Mills Health Centre or Thornbrook Health Centre Placement Area Musculoskeletal Outpatients Year 1,2 & 3 Contact Number 01298 212 811 Prior to Placement Please contact the Physiotherapy Department on the above number and ask to speak to Helen Isaac or Vicky Allen no less than 3 weeks prior to commencing the placement Day 1 Report to the Physiotherapy Department on the First Floor. Bring ID including National Insurance Number, a passport or a driving licence and a bill (other than a mobile bill). This is required to obtain an NHS SMART Card. Students are given an induction and will then need to have their photograph taken for their SMART card About the Department Patients are referred to physiotherapy via Consultants, GPs, Podiatrists, Midwives, Minor Injury Unit and Self Referral. We see a mixed caseload of both chronic and acute patients with both spinal and peripheral problems. Patients are seen on a one to one basis. Within the Department there are 5 curtained cubicles and a small gym area. Some of the staff work at a GP practice and a health centre and you may be expected to work from these on your placement. Physiotherapy Staff Staffing at present includes a Team Leader, two ESP’s six Band 6/7 Physiotherapists and one Band 5 Physiotherapist, a Physiotherapy Assistant and 3 Admin Personnel. Conditions likely to see Peripheral: all joints Acute injuries e.g. fractures, soft tissue injuries. Post-op orthopaedic e.g. rotator cuff repairs, ASADs and TKRs. Chronic conditions e.g. OA, fibromyalgia and Tendinopathies, etc Spinal: LBP: Acute e.g. discogenic, chronic e.g. degenerative, spinal stenosis etc. SI joint conditions Cervical: Whiplash and Cervical Spondylosis Thoracic conditions Learning Opportunities As the placement progresses students will develop their own caseload, which is built up gradually and reflects the ability of the student. Supervisor levels are determined on an individual basis and time is put aside for the student to observe other team members. There may also be an opportunity to spend some time with other members of the team including a Podiatrist, the MSK team, the Injection Clinic, a Pain Management Group, Hydrotherapy and Cardiac Rehabilitation General Information The Department opens from 8.30-4.30 Mon, Wed and Fri and 8.30-6.00 Tues and 8.30-5.30 Thurs. Students working hours will vary depending on the hours worked by their Supervisor. If a student is unable to come into work, the student must contact the department (01298 212 811) at the earliest opportunity and inform Vicky Allen or their supervisor. As most of the staff are part-time the student will be shared between two supervisors. Lockers and changing facilities are available in the Department. Lunch can be brought in or can be bought at the hospital canteen. The hospital has a No Smoking policy. The hospital has a free car park. There is no student accommodation available for this placement and therefore the student will require a car.
