Running head: POST SECONDARY LESSON PLAN Post Secondary Lesson Plan Carnell Durant AET525 March 13, 2014 Mr. Gil 11 POST-SECONDARY LESSON PLAN 22 A brief search for a lesson plan via any search online engine or the local library will produce a plethora of material for almost every topic. This paper discusses will review a post-secondary lesson plan and differentiate the content that is to be learned. This will be based upon four differentiated instructional methods. Differentiate by Content The necessity to differentiate class content is a matter of determining what is taught or how students gain access to the content. If necessary teachers or facilitators have the option of providing their students with “books on tape, reading material based upon their individual reading level, varied topics for research, independent study options”. At the Hector Garza Residential Treatment Center, students are placed in the same group based primarily upon their age. Some of these individuals have not attended school on a regular basis for various reasons. Others are not at the same level of mental capacity due to drug and alcohol abuse by themselves or their family. The school within the treatment center does an outstanding job of having a minimum of one teacher and two aides that cater to the individual needs of the student. For example in the science class students there are a dozen students divided into those that are learning biology, or chemistry. There is a one or two that work independently based upon how many credits they need to graduate. The content is varied whether the student is a seventeen year old that only needs three credits to complete science or another individual of the same age that is only working at the ninth-grade level. The needs of the student and the best method of learning dictates the best method to provide instruction. POST-SECONDARY LESSON PLAN 23 Instructional Strategies The necessity for varying or modifying the instructional strategies for a lesson plan depends upon various criteria. The primary purpose of differentiating instruction should take into consideration the various ways students prefer to learn, what interests they possess, knowledge level, and how they respond to the current instructional strategies. What subject the instructor is attempting to teach will play a significant part to determine the appropriate strategies. “Differentiated instruction is a process to approach teaching and learning for students of differing abilities in the same class." You can differentiate content, process or product. The intent of differentiating instruction is to maximize each student's growth and individual success by meeting each student where he or she is, and assisting in the learning process. The End Product The end product in a lesson plan is the goal that you desire your students to achieve. Whether it’s learning how to tread water for two minutes for a lifesaving course or to determine the best way to navigate the internet successfully for beginning users. The only question finding the best method that is fair to all students, and not creating more confusion than clarification of the subject matter the students will master. The Learning Environment and Different Learning Styles Modifying the environment to accommodate different learning styles is an interesting and challenging proposition. Whether it's the tradition in-house instruction, online or a hybrid class the crux of the matter is to provide each student's learning style with a maximum potential to successfully absorb the subject matter.
