Lesson: -Review syllabus and class procedures with students -Getting to know you index card activity -Dr. Seuss Cool Down: After the first day of class, what are your impressions about this course? Homework -Read over the syllabus with one of your parents and have them sign it. -Read sections 1 and 2 of chapter 1 (pages 2-11) Tuesday DATE 8/20/2013 Objectives/Standards 1. Identify the goals of psychology. 2. Explain how psychology is a science. 3. Describe work done by psychologists according to their areas of specialization. Materials Psychology and Psychologists PowerPoint, Psychology and Psychologists Guided Notes, construction paper, markers Activities Warm Up: Prepare for quiz on sections 1 and 2 of chapter 1. After about a minute or two, tell students that this was an experiment, and have them respond to the following questions: How did you react to this unexpected situation? What emotions or feelings did you experience? Which thoughts helped you deal with the situation and which ones hindered your ability to do so? What steps can you take to overcome anxiety when faced with an unexpected situation? How did this exercise demonstrate the goals of psychology? Describe what environmental and health psychologists do.
