These are called ‘non-continuous’ or ‘stative’ verbs because they often describe a ‘state’ that lasts for a long time. They are different from dynamic verbs which describe a momentary action e.g. sing, dance, swim etc. Examples of stative verbs include: forget, hate ,like, love, prefer, remember, understand, want To help students remember which verbs are stative, there is the following four categories: 1. 2. 3. 4. Verbs that express emotions: like, hate, prefer, want, etc. Verbs that are connected with senses: see, hear, taste, etc. Verbs connected with thinking and opinions: believe, imagine, remember, etc. Verbs connected with possessions: own, belong, have, etc. There are some verbs that can be used either as stative or dynamic verbs depending on the context e.g. have or think.
