Introducing stative verbs
Language Analysis
Stative verbs
In English, some verbs are not normally used with -ing. These are called ‘non-continuous’ or ‘stative’
verbs because they often describe a ‘state’ that lasts for a long time.
They are different from dynamic verbs which describe a momentary action e.g. sing, dance, swim etc.
Examples of stative verbs include:
forget, hate ,like, love, prefer, remember, understand, want
To help students remember which verbs are stative, there is the following four categories:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Verbs that express emotions: like, hate, prefer, want, etc.
Verbs that are connected with senses: see, hear, taste, etc.
Verbs connected with thinking and opinions: believe, imagine, remember, etc.
Verbs connected with possessions: own, belong, have, etc.
There are some verbs that can be used either as stative or dynamic verbs depending on the context e.g.
have or think.
I have a car = I own a car. STATIVE
I am having a bath = I am bathing. (ACTION, DYNAMIC VERB)
I see a big car. (with my eyes) STATIVE
I am seeing my brother on Monday = meet. (ACTION, DYNAMIC VERBS)
I prefer... I'd rather...
In English we say we prefer one activity to another. I prefer -ing to -ing.
Example
I prefer playing computer games to watching TV.
We can also say we'd rather do one activity than another. I'd rather ... than ....
Example
I'd rather play computer games than watch TV.

Hi Jane,
Thanks for your email inviting me to stay in the
holidays. I’d love to come.
It’s going to be so cool to go to the festival with
your parents. Which bands are playing? A lot of
new bands are playing at the festivals this
summer. But actually, I prefer the older bands. I
love Coldplay’s music. I remember seeing them in
a concert on the TV. They were amazing.
Anyway, I have to finish my homework now. It’s
maths and I hate maths. I’d rather tidy my
bedroom!
See you soon,
Louise
