Large Quantity Paper Product Handling and Recycling Opportunities
In an effort to assist our programs with purging unnecessary paper waste, the department will begin
scheduling quarterly paper product recycling pick-ups, similar to our electronic waste recycling
opportunities.
If your area has a need outside of the scheduled pick up date, you should contact our Building
Management group to help you coordinate discarding the paper waste. If our Building team is not able
to assist due to timing or location, etc., you may need to submit an FSR and pay to have the paper waste
picked up.
Handling of large volumes of paper waste requires communication and coordination with the building
manager and custodial services.
Here are some general guidelines:
1. Be sure the trash receptacle (trash can/bag/box) you choose isn’t too heavy or bulky to lift.
a. If the receptacle is too heavy, bulky, or if there are excessive amounts, custodial services
will request that you contact recycling for a pick up. Recycling may charge a fee
depending on the task.
b. Fill the receptacle so that it is manageable and use multiple receptacles, if necessary.
2. Once full, place the receptacle near a corridor trash bin/s making sure not to block ingress,
egress, or regress.
a. Be sure not to leave multiple receptacles at one location on a single day. Remember to
keep the quantities’ manageable.
b. You may need to discard over the course of multiple days.
c. Always label waste not in the bin as “Trash”.
3. Never leave PHI or PII in unlocked bins.
a. PHI and/or PII must be properly discarded in the locked bins or shredded.
b. Locked bins are located in the clinic and Reed building on the C, 1, and 4 floors.
c. If you will have large volumes of PHI and/or PII you will need to make special
arrangements with our Procurement dept., Anna Mokraiy to have an off schedule pick
up.
d. Never fill the shredder bins with large volumes of documents, as this will impact the
routine use by other PIs and staff. Instead, see 3.c.
4. Please don’t mix paper waste with other waste.
a. Be sure to keep paper waste separate from other waste, for recycling purposes. The
SOM and our department provide separate receptacles from different vendors. If you
need one please let us know.
5. Perishables should go into the corridor trash bins to be picked up daily.
6. Large volumes of journals, books, magazines, etc., should not be placed in the regular trash bins.
a. Refer to item #1.
b. Use a separate receptacle for these items.
7. If our Building Management group is not able to assist with a special pick-up due to other
commitments and you don’t wish to go the FSR route, you may borrow a rolling cart from
Building Management for you/your staff to use to remove the paper waste.
a. Check out a wheeled cart/s from our building group. Fill the cart with paper waste so
that it can easily be taken to the dumpster in CHS at the B level dock.
b. Remember to, check in, and return the wheeled cart/s to the building group so that
others may use it.
