The focus is on establishing positive interactive relationships with others; proactively exploring their world; gaining environmental control skills; gaining the highest level of personal mobility and independence. We will reference the CYC vision for learners with PMLD and will ensure age appropriate activities and experiences. Children will be offered a range of multisensory activities. Children will be taught to tolerate and then enjoy a range of multi-sensory experiences. Children following the HMO semi-formal curriculum learn best when their learning is related to their own experience. Some may learn best through structured play; some will learn best through functional activities and others will respond to thematic approaches. Children will be offered a range of total communication strategies Children will be taught to be effective communicators with age appropriate social skills Children will experience structured play activities in the classroom which mirror skills needed for life Children will experience opportunities to practice skills and apply their understanding in community settings Children will experience thematic topics which extend their life experiences and scaffold their understanding of the wider world Children will experience safe ways of working and learning Children will be taught numeracy and literacy in meaningful contexts. Learning will be highly structured with opportunities to practice new skills and consolidate prior learning in practical situations. Learning will remain tangible and we will avoid over emphasis on the abstract. Children may have specific interventions to address areas of need. Children will use a range of total communication strategies Children will follow a thematic approach which facilitates skill development and acquisition of knowledge.
