Brisbane is a beautiful city and it has a rich and exciting history. “The View from Here” shows an important era in Brisbane’s history. It is an era which signifies social advancement, historical advancement and population growth. This is an important era and this exhibition gives us a unique insight into this important time in our history. The photo which represents the exhibition should show not only Brisbane’s history, but also its advancement from the home of convicts to the home of families. I believe that my chosen picture represents this in a way that no other photo can replicate, and for that reason I believe it is the best choice for the brochure. In the picture I have chosen, you can see the Windmill Tower, which is a heritage listed tower and the oldest surviving building in Brisbane. The Windmill Tower is an important part of Brisbane’s history as it illustrates various key phases. It was built in colonial times in 1828 by convicts and has been used for a variety of purposes. It was used to grind grains such as wheat and as a form of punishments for convicts. It was later used as a signal station for shipping, the Queensland Museum’s first home and the official time keeping device for the settlement. It was also used for early television research and broadcasting. These uses are an important part of Brisbane’s history as they show its growth and development from a penal colony to the Brisbane we now know. The Windmill Tower is unique to Brisbane and serves as an important landmark. It is one of the last remaining landmarks which contain tangible evidence of key phases of Brisbane’s history. This photograph flawlessly captures the picturesque qualities of the Windmill Tower, as well as its historical importance. The windmill is an important part of Brisbane’s history and a vital part of the exhibition ,and for those reasons it should feature on the front of the brochure. The picture also features two young children playing on the sidewalk,They are both very young girls and they are dressed in clothing which dates back to the early 1900s. They stand out in this picture, but they are not there by accident. These children represent the evolution of Brisbane from a place of convicts to a safe place to raise a family. The two children look happy and carefree as they play together,.There is no obvious adult supervision and this shows that Brisbane is a place where you can be confident in your child’s safety as they play, even if you can’t see them. This shows a large social progression. This social progression is an important part of Brisbane’s history and this is captured impeccably in the photograph. However this was not all the photographer wanted to show. He wanted to capture something else very important- the contrast. The young girls signify the future. They show Brisbane as a safe place to live and represent Brisbane’s social progression while the Windmill signifies the past and shows Brisbane’s historical progression. This contrast is also an important part of this photo, and it too has been captured flawlessly. “The View From Here” is an exhibition that features photographs that capture the social and historical advancement of Brisbane. The photo I have chosen faultlessly captures these advancements in a way that no other picture could. reproduce. The use of the two young girls to represent social advancement and The Old Windmill to represent historical advancement created an infallible representation of the Brisbane of the past and the Brisbane of today.
