The department also offers an annual 3-day continuing medical education program for community pathologists in the State of Wisconsin and surrounding states, “The Midwestern Conference”, which provides an average of 19 AMA accredited CME hours to participants. The conference is held at a hotel in downtown Milwaukee and counts with the attendance yearly of more than 100 pathologists from the community and from various academic medical centers. The department also sponsors several international meetings for pathologists in various countries outside of the United States, in particular through collaboration with the Arkadi M. Rywlin International Pathology Slide Seminar Club and various other organizations abroad. Another way in which the department contributes to continuing medical education is through participation by its various faculty members in national and international meetings and update courses, including the National Meeting of the College of American Pathologists, the National Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Pathology, the United States and Cnadian Academy of Pathology national Meeting, the International Academy of Pathology International Meetingh, the Ejuropean Society of Pathology Meeting, the Latin American Society of Pathology Meeting, the International Society of Dermatopathology Meeting, and various national and local societies both abroad and in the United States. Grand Rounds – Intro: Pathology Grand Rounds are conducted in the department every month utilizing a lecture format. The majority of our guest speakers are reputable pathologists from other institutions who are selected as guest speakers for the innovative aspect of their research or clinical activities. Occasionally, members of our own faculty will present their current research or other innovative clinical activities of interest to the faculty. Pathology Grand Rounds are widely announced throughout campus and are generally very well attended. Annual Midwestern Conference – (Introduction): As part of the department’s educational activities and to fulfill its commitment to provide the community of physicians in Southeastern Wisconsin and surrounding areas credits in continuing medical education in pathology, we have been offering an annual update course in surgical pathology, “The Midwestern Conference”, since 2008. The course is intended for surgical pathologists in community practice, as well as for trainees in pathology, and offers a broad overview of the most recent advances and discoveries in the field of surgical pathology. The course takes place over 3 days during one weekend in the month of September. Approximately 19 hours of AMA accredited Category 1 CME credit hours are provided in each course. Five to six prominent pathologists from various prestigious academic institutions throughout the United States serve as the guest faculty, and the remainder of lectures is provided by MCW faculty members. The course is intended to be practical, informative and timely, and covers a broad range of subjects in diagnostic pathology. Active participation of the audience is encouraged through the use of remote access devices for anonymous feedback on the issues discussed. The course has enjoyed high ratings by the audience and is well-attended, and continues to successfully attract a diverse audience of pathologists from over 35 states and several countries abroad. Arkadi M. Rywlin International Pathology Slide Seminars: The Arkadi M. Rywlin International Pathology Slide Seminar is a not-for-profit organization that includes approximately 45 international academic pathologists engaged in the exchange of interesting and challenging cases. The Pathology Department at the Medical College of Wisconsin serves as the hub of the organization, whose mission is to promote the exchange of information in a spirit of collegiality, with the purpose of sharing ideas and opinions around the cases circulated to further our understanding of the various disease processes under study. The organization launched to the public its first International AMR Symposium in Anatomic Pathology in 199_ in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. Since then, more than 6 international events have taken place, the most recent one in Stockholm, Sweden. The 2 most recent venues have sponsored AMA category I CME credits through the department of pathology and the MCW Office of Continuing Medical Education. Other Conferences – Introduction: The department participates and sponsors CME credits and continuing medical education in a variety of other venues, particularly overseas, by supporting and sponsoring various institutions and organizations in the creation of CME activities for pathologists. These include: Update Courses in Surgical Pathology for the Italian Lega Contra Cancer in La Spezia, Italy, and for various surgical pathology meetings in Latin America. Clinical Services: - - Please reverse the order of the icons and place Anatomic Pathology first and Clinical Pathology next to it. Under the introduction/description for Anatomic Pathology we will need to update the numbers for the surgical pathology cases, cytology cases, etc. We should have a picture of the director of each division in the front page. Each one of the subspecialties in Anatomic Pathology should have links to its own page, with a more detailed explanation of the specialty by its members/director, including pictures and perhaps a short video clip. The Clinical Pathology page should follow the same format, with Dr. Kroft’s picture plus a detailed explanation of the various subdivisions, and links for each subdivision with a further explanation in more detail by the faculty in charge (plus pictures, videos, etc to illustrate the activities). Consultation Services: The Department of Pathology offers expert consultation services to colleagues in the community and at other institutions for difficult or challenging cases in several areas of expertise, including thoracic pathology (lung, mediastinum, pleura), soft tissue and musculoskeletal pathology, endocrine pathology, hematopathology, dermatopathology, neuropathology, cytopathology and gastrointestinal and liver pathology. Additionally, consultative services in molecular pathology are available through our Clinical and Translational Research Core Lab. Consultation services are also available from the Clinical Pathology division in coagulation, flow cytometry, microbiology and clinical chemistry and toxicology. Funded Research (Intro): A variety of funded research activities are carried out by the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, including research that is funded by Government Agencies (NIH, DOD, and others), Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin (AHW) endowment, and various other private and commercial sources.
