Jessica Brown: Lesson Plans for the Week of Mar 2nd – Mar 6th Objectives P Monday (A Day) Tuesday (B Day) Wednesday (A Day) SWBAT: Recognize the significance of meiosis to sexual reproduction. Identifying the various stages of meiosis. Compare and contrast the differences between mitosis and meiosis. ENGAGE: Video: Crash Course over Meiosis. The students will be able to get a visual of the various stages of meiosis. This video will be enabling various learning styles to engage within the subject of meiosis. The students will need to obtain one white board, dry erase maker and an eraser. The students will complete a double bubble map. The students will be comparing and contrasting mitosis and meiosis. They will have an allotted amount of time to complete this. Then the groups will switch and critique each other’s map. Then back to Thursday (B Day) ICE DAY!! Friday (A Day) SWBAT: Recognize the significance of meiosis to sexual reproduction. Identifying the various stages of meiosis. Compare and contrast the differences between mitosis and meiosis. ENGAGE: Video: Amoeba Sisters over meiosis. This video explains the process of meiosis and how we obtain half of our chromosomes from dad and the other half from mom. The video is great for visual learners. Page 1 of 5 Jessica Brown: Lesson Plans for the Week of Mar 2nd – Mar 6th Monday (A Day) LA EXPLORE: Meiosis Sequencing Notes. The sequencing notes will be placed on the overhead camera. This will enable the students to copy the sequencing notes. While the students copy these notes the teacher will go into further detail about the process of meiosis. After the introduction of meiosis, the teacher will review the mitosis sequencing notes. This comparison will be used within the next activity. EXPLAIN: Venn diagram Tuesday (B Day) EXPLORE: DNA fingerprinting needs to be completed before Meiosis introduction can occur. While the students copy these notes the teacher will go into further detail about the process of meiosis. After the introduction of meiosis, the teacher will review the mitosis sequencing notes. This comparison will Wednesday (A Day) theirs to make corrections. EXPLORE: Review the meiosis sequencing notes. Asking probing questions throughout the review to ensure understanding. Compare and contrast mitosis from meiosis. EXPLAIN: Start and finish Meiosis matching lab. If they started on it last class, they will need to finish that and turn it in by the end of the class period. The students will be making a meiosis foldable that will requires them to cut/paste pictures, labels and descriptions within the appropriate stage of meiosis. Study guide over meiosis, this will prepare the Thursday (B Day) Friday (A Day) EXPLORE: Students will be given a “Meiosis drawing lab.” The students will use their references; notes, videos, worksheet. All of these references will help the students complete the meiosis drawing lab. The students will be drawing out the various stages of meiosis. EXPLAIN/ELABORATE: Meiosis Quiz: This quiz will access what the students have learned throughout the last two/three class periods. Page 2 of 5 Jessica Brown: Lesson Plans for the Week of Mar 2nd – Mar 6th Monday (A Day) Tuesday (B Day) over mitosis and meiosis. Split the groups up into various groups using the group maker. There should be able 3-4 people within each group. The students will be given large pieces of paper in order to complete the Venn diagram, comparing mitosis and meiosis. The students will place these throughout the classroom. Afterwards the students will walk around the room and place sticky notes on the large pieces of paper. The students will be given a small piece of paper to complete this exit ticket. ELABORATE: (If time Wednesday (A Day) Thursday (B Day) Friday (A Day) Student/Teacher Volleyball Game: this will take place within A4. The students will be released from class an hour early to watch if they have bought a ticket.
