2. Rationale
The DPT has been revised with the following aims:
To maximise the benefits to undergraduate students from two new appointments in
Asian Studies: new Honours option courses have been created drawing on the specialisms of recently appointed staff to widen the range of topics available, and students will now have the opportunity to take more option courses
To improve the efficiency of Japanese language teaching and assessment in years 3 and
4, particularly in view of the increase in student numbers since the current courses were introduced: external examiners have consistently commended the quality of this aspect of the programme, but have also expressed concern at the volume of marking involved and advised that we simplify in order to make the assessment process smoother
To render the degree structure more transparent by bringing it into line with those for comparable programmes: the proposed DPT is closest to the model used in Chinese and
Linguistics and is also more compatible with the model for Modern European Languages and Linguistics than the previous version
