Emily Benner Emily Benner is a winner of the 2012 PA Livestock Association scholarship. She is the 19 year old daughter of Frederick and Kimberly Benner of Mifflintown, PA. Emily is a 2010 graduated of Juniata High School where she was a member of the field hockey team, yearbook staff, marching band, Tri-M Music Society, concert band, district band, track and field, junior class play, senior class play, and national honor society. Emily has been a 4-H member for the past 12 years exhibiting with the 4-H Beef and Breeder Club. She has held the offices of president and treasurer. Emily is not only committed to her 4-H livestock projects, but also served as a 4-H camp counselor and presenter during 4-H Farm City week from 2006 to 2010. She has participated in Dale Carnegie Public Speaking Course, 4-H Citizenship program, 4-H Farm-City School program and Penn State Cow Camp. Emily mentioned, “From exhibiting livestock for the past ten years, I have learned a tremendous amount in the beef industry and have been able to improve my herd at home. I have also learned simple but yet important things such as responsibility and hard work.” In 2010, Emily was awarded the Outstanding FFA Award at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition. In 2011, she received the Beef Scholarship Award. Emily is currently enrolled as a junior in the animal science program at the Pennsylvania State University. She is a member of the Block and Bridle, Dairy Reproductive Research Team, Penn State Mont Alto Collegiate FFA, Blue and White Society and was a member of the Lion Ambassador team her freshman year. Emily has been on dean’s list freshman and sophomore years, received the 2011 President Freshman award and was the outstanding student in the College of Agricultural Sciences her freshman year. This past March, Emily held an externship with Hanover Shoe Farms. Over the summer, she was the assistant in the Juniata County Penn State Extension office assisting with 4-H camp, 4-H youth fair, and various other activities. Emily is currently an employee at the Pennsylvania State University Swine Research Center. Her immediate goals are to graduate from the Pennsylvania State University with a 3.8 GPA or higher, be a member of the Ag Advocate team, and getting accepted into a veterinary school after undergrad. Her future goals are to be a veterinarian, focusing on large animals. Emily would like to give back to the agricultural industry through promoting the beef industry. Someday she would like to own her own beef operation with over 100 beef cattle.
