Let’s talk about money
On behalf of Churchwardens and clergy we would like to begin by thanking you for your support and generosity to
the work and mission of the Anglican churches in this place over many years.
We seldom talk about money at church worship yet we are aware that Jesus did talk about money quite often. As
people of faith in the Penlee Cluster now is the time for us to think about our use of money.
As Christians at the far end of the UK we know that it has always been a struggle to make ends meet. In everyday
life and in our churches there has not been much spare cash.
Over the years our churches, along with other churches, have responded in Christian love to the needs of others.
The three villages youth project and the Community medical transport project..CHIN and the daily Breakfast Project
for the homeless are good examples of our care for others.
This year some of our church money and time has been spent on creating the Play Zone at St John’s for the under
5’s.We’ve also created the Quiet Garden at Paul…a place to get away from it all. Our e waves project now puts out a
daily local thought for the day. People of all ages are writing and responding to these. We are reaching out beyond
the doors of our churches through modern technology.
Our four church buildings are very much in use our local community. They are used not only for regular worship but
to celebrate special moments like Weddings and Baptisms. Within our historic buildings where prayer is offered we
find hope and strength at times like Funerals and at difficult moments of our lives. Our churches are also venues for
concerts and art exhibitions providing spaces for us to think and reflect. Our buildings are a huge teaching resource
for the hundreds of school children who regularly visit. Of course your money is needed to continue this work.
In national surveys Cornish people come top in their support for charity through volunteering both their time and in
their giving of money. Our Church members are a big part of this effort. We are now aware that much of our church
finance has come from legacies of past members and we have been living off their generosity to us.
Now is the time for us to respond to God in 2014. We need to stand together as we respond to God’s love, serving
our communities in new and exciting ways. We need to use our special church buildings in a way that makes sense
for us today and to offer worship to God in this generation here in this beautiful land of the Cornish saints.
No wonder Jesus talked to people about money. He knew that the way we use our money, time and resources say
something about our faith and our response to God’s love for us.
Our Response
Lots of us have been severely affected by the recession and austerity measures. It might be that you are in danger of
giving too much and so putting your self at risk. In which case we understand and it would be right to reduce your
contribution.
But if it has been sometime since you reviewed your giving to the work of the church you might find you could
increase your regular commitment.
You could also check that in your giving you are being your most effective and that we are all giving even if we are
unable to be at worship for a week or two, knowing that Church bills still need to be paid when we are not there.

If you are a tax payer then please make sure your donations are Gift Aided. Then every £1 you give means
that the church gets an extra 25p just from your signature!

You might also consider giving through a Standing Order from your bank

Similarly you could use a church envelope scheme.
In this way we are all contributing to the cost both of the work and mission of the individual Churches in the Penlee
Cluster and the work we undertake together. Thank you for your help and support
Every blessing,
Sian Yates, Keith Owen, Andrew Yates
