US Army Officer, former Bolles and West Point swimmer, and local lymphoma patient Byron Plapp was diagnosed with stage 4 T-
Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in December 2012. For many patients battling blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, a bone marrow transplant is their only hope for a second chance at life, yet only 30% have a matching donor in their family. These patients rely on Be The
Match to find their life saving donor in the form of a complete stranger. Be The Match and the Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation are offering local residents the unique opportunity to be that stranger! Join the Be The Match Registry this Saturday at the
Julington Creek Recreation Center in honor of Byron.
Though he is not currently in need of a marrow transplant, Byron is sharing his story to raise awareness of the urgent need to add more committed donors for over 12,000 patients in year who do need a marrow transplant. A simple cheek swab is all it takes to determine if you could be a match for a patient like Byron.
Anyone between the ages of 18 and 44 can join the donor Registry.
Joining requires a consent form and a quick cheek swab. Once registered, you are only contacted if you are a match for a patient in need. Those unable to join can help by making a tax-deductible donation to Be The Match to help us continue our life-saving mission.
What if YOU could be the ONE to save a life like Byron’s? A simple cheek swab is all it takes! For more information or to donate, visit http://bethematchfoundation.org/goto/ByronPlapp .
