John Norman was born at Sandivaig in the house (now a ruin) above Lochcarnan pier on 17 March 1880.
His parents were Fearchar MacMillan and Marion MacPherson.
John would have attended the Ladies’ School but he died as a child sometime after his tenth birthday.

Malcolm MacEachen was born in the house now owned by Dr Louise Hodgson, 6a Lochcarnan, on 11
May 1880. His parents were Alexander MacEachen and Catherine Wilson. He would have attended the
Ladies’ School for most of his school days and may have gone to the new school, Carnan Public School,
for the last year of his education.
Calum remained in Lochcarnan with his brothers Neil and Donald and sisters Anna and Catriona crofting
and fishing until he was middle aged. But from their house in Lochcarnan the tides restricted access to
the fishing grounds and so after Neil married and left the family home, and at an age when the
neighbours thought they should have been moving ‘in other ways’ rather than the other way around,
he, Donald and Anna moved out to Rubha Caolas Luirsay, exchanging houses with Michael MacInnes.
They were joined here every winter by their sister Catriona who spend the summer season working in
hotels in Oban. At Rubha Caolas Luirsay there was good access to the fishing grounds at all states of the
tide and Calum lived here for the rest of his life.
The house at 6 Lochcarnan where the family of Alistair and Catherine MacEachen lived. The house has now been
renovated into a cottage owned by Louise Hodgson.

they lived in Lochcarnan.
Catherine did not remain in Uist as an adult.

Christina Johnstone was born at 5 Rhudhgashernish on 3 February 1881, her parents were John and Ann
Johnstone.
Ciorstaidh Bhan (as she was always known) married Angus MacLeod and had 3 children. The family lived
for some years at Baile Na Birlinn on the north shore of Loch Skipport and they emigrated to Canada in
about 1920. Tragically when the boat sailed to Canada her two daughters Mary Flora and Mary, had
measles and were not allowed to travel. They were brought up by Kirsty’s family in Rhudhgashernish
and never went to Canada.

Donald John’s parents were James MacFarlane and Lily Nicholson of Rhudhgashernish, they lived in the
house where Donald Beaton lives today. Donald John was born on 26 August 1881.

Mary Struthers was born at Ardmore on 10 September 1881, she was the oldest daughter of William
Struthers and Margaret MacInnes and she was always known as Mairi Mhor Uilleam.
The family moved to the croft 6 Rhudhgashernish on the shore of Bagh na Creig Loisgte when Mary was
young. Mary spent her life at home and helping on the croft. She died on 19 January 1940 aged 67
years.

Michael MacInnes (Micheil mac Dhomhnaill ‘ic Mhicheil)
Micheal’s parents were Ann Grieve and Donald MacInnes of Rhudhgashernish, he was born on 25
January 1882.
Michael’s family went to live in Calternish and later built a house a Rubha Caolas Luirsay. Michael left
South Uist and worked at sea, he had his home on the mainland and was married to Mary Bowie (?)
from Peninerine, South Uist. When he retired he came to live at 6 Lochcarnan (the house now owned by
Dr Louise Hodgson), having exchanged houses with the MacEachens who wanted to go live in Rubha
Caolas Luirsay for the fishing. When Michael died, Mary his widow went to live with her niece Mary
Struthers and Ronald MacEachen in Loch Skipport.

Catherine Beaton was a daughter of Donald Beaton and Margaret MacMillan and she was born on 27
July 1882. The family lived at 12 Rhudhgashernish, close to the shore of the South Ford where Angus
Beaton lives today.
Kate spent her life in domestic service working both on the mainland and in Uist (she was housekeeper
for Fr Morrison at Ardkenneth and several scholl teachers). She retired to the family house where whe
lived until she died in 1963.

Neil MacEachen (Naill mac Alasdair ‘ic Dhomhnaill)

Neil MacEachen was always known as Naill Mor. He was the second son of Alexander MacEachen and
Catherine Wilson of Lochcarnan and he was born on 20 August 1882.
Neil spent his life on the croft in Lochcarnan until her married the teacher at Carnan Public School, Miss
Janet MacVarish, in 1925 or 1926. After their marriage Mrs MacEachen transferred to East Gerinish
School and the couple lived in the school house there for a few years where Neil renovated the house
Baile na Birlinn on the north shore of Loch Skipport which he had bought from Angus MacLeod when the
MacLeods emigrated to Canada. Eventually they moved to Baile na Birlinn and lived there until near the
end of their lives.
Janet and Neil did not have any children.
After Janet’s death, Neil lived on his own at Baile na Birlinn until 1964 when he went to live with his
niece in Oban. He died in Oban in 1966 at the age of 84.
Mary Flora Campbell (Mairi Flora Eoghain)

Mary Flora Campbell was born at the family home beneath Caltinish Cliffs on 5 September 1882. Her
parents were Ewen Campbell and Flora MacCormick.
Mary Flora was never married. She spent some time in domestic service in Glasgow until she came back
home to Caltinish to look after her ageing parents. She moved to Lochcarnan in 1954 and died in 1961
at the age of 73.

Christina Johnstone was the second daughter of John and Ann Johnstone of 5 Rhudhgashernish to be
called Christina and consequently she was known as Ciostaidh Bheag. She was born on 16 January 1883.
After leaving school Kirsty spent some time on the mainland. She returned to South Uist and married
Roderick MacIntyre from Iochdar. She had no children and died in early 1950 at the age of 67.
John MacLean (Seonaidh mac Dhomhnaill ‘ic Lachlainn)

John MacLean was born in Rhudhgashernish on 25 January 1883 to Donald MacLean and Peggy
MacIntyre. The family home was situated high up above the west shore of Bagh na Creag Loisgte.
John spent most of his life crofting and fishing in Rhudhgashernish. He married Mary Margaret MacLeod
and they lived in the house now belonging to Alecina Morrison. They had a family of four, including a
girl Peggy, who was immortalized in the song ‘Pheigi a’ Ghraidh’ written by Roderick Campbell.

Donald John Johnstone was born on 7 February 1883 and his parents were Malcolm Johnstone and Mary
MacDonald. The family house was situated at the end of the Rhudhgashernish peninsula.
After leaving school Donald John went to sea. He was 58 when he was killed by a car in a hit-and-run in
Lochboisdale in 1941.
John Nicholson (Seonaidh mac Uisdean ‘ic Dhomhnaill)
John was born on 6 November 1883, a son of Hugh Nicholson and Mary MacAulay of Rhudhgashernish.
John left South Uist to work on the mainland.

Peggy, as she was known, left home and went to live and work on the mainland.

Mary, as she was known locally, was born at Sandivaig, Lochcarnan on 9 Octeber 1884. The oldest
daughter of Samuel MacLellan and Johanna Nicholson. The original MacLellan house was a black house
down by the shore, a slated house was built later but was demolished some years ago and Donald John
MacLellan’s bungalow was built beside the site.
Mary left South Uist quite young and went into domestic service on the mainland, working mainly in
farmhouses. She married and settled in Campbeltown where she and her husband raised a family of
two daughters. Mary died fairly young.

Neil Beaton was born on 20 October 1884, a son of Donald Beaton and Margaret MacMillan of
Rhudhgashernish.
Neil had a great love of the sea and was noted as a good boatman. His life was spent fishing and
working the croft and he lived all his life on the croft on the shore of the South Ford. For many years
Neil was the township clerk. He married Mary MacKay from Ardmore and they raised a large family of
eight boys and three girls. Neil died in his eighties and his son Angus and some of his family now live in
the croft house.

Christina MacPherson
Christina was born on 12 January 1885, her parents were Mary Campbell and James MacPherson. The
family came from Iochdar and lived at Sandivaig for a while before moving to the mainland.
Janet Johnstone (Seonaid Iain Johnstone)

Janet was the third daughter of John and Ann Johnstone of Rhudhgashernish. She was born on 27
January 1885.
Janet left South Uist and went to work in domestic service in Glasgow for some years. She emigrated to
Canada where she was married and had children. She died in 1978 aged 93.

Like his brother Calum, Donald stayed in the family home crofting and fishing until he was middle aged.
Then, in order to have a better fishing, he moved to Rubha Caolas Luirsay with his brother Calum and his
sister Anna. He lived there until he died in 1946 at the age of 61.
Jessie MacDermaid (Jessie ‘ic Iarmaid, ni’n Iain Dhomhnaill Iain)
Jessie was born at Outer Sandivaig, Lochcarnan on 4 November 1885, she was the oldest daughter of
John MacDermaid and Catherine Douglas. The MacDermaid house has now been rebuilt and belongs to
Margaret Nobles (nee MacRury).
Jessie married Donald MacInnes, Domnuill mac Coistaidh Aonghais Mhoir, from Ardmore and went to
live there. She raised a family of four boys and two girls but tragically Donald and a son, Angus John,
were both drowned whilst the children were very young. They had a barrel of herring in the boat, the
barrel rolled to one side and the boat capsized in the bay in front of the house …

Neil was born in 1885, his parents were Alasdair and Margaret Campbell of Calternish.

Ann and Catherine MacLean were twins born on 7 May 1886 at Bagh na Creag Loisgte in
Rhudhgashernish to Donald MacLean and Margaret MacIntyre.
Ann married Donald Alexander Johnstone of Rhudhgashernish and went to live in Ardmore. She was a
good tailoress. She had no children so she brought up one of her brother Lachlan’s children, Peggy. Ann
died in the early sixties.
After leaving Carnan Public School, Catriona went to work on the mainland. When she came home she
married Calum MacInnes (Calum Seonaid) and lived at Taigh Chaluim, the house where the
MacPhersons live today, in Lochcarnan. Catriona and Calum had no children so they brought up
Catriona’s nephew, Donald, a son of her brother Lachlan, and they took in lodgers, including teachers at
Carnan School. Catriona was a very good weaver, she had 2 looms. She died in the sixties.

Christina MacLellan was born at Sandivaig on 9 June 1886, the second daughter of Samuel MacLellan
and Johanna Nicholson.
After leaving school Chrissie went to work on a farm in Mull where she later married into a farming
family. She had a family of two girls and one boy and their descendants are still living in Mull. Chrissie
died at a fairly young age.

Donald Johnstone (Domhnall Beag)
Donald was born at Bagh Dubh, Lochcarnan on 26 August 1886, his parents were James Johnstone and
Ann MacInnes.
Donald had a crippled leg. He never married and lived his life in Bagh Dubh, staying alone after his
parents died. He was the local shoemaker.
Donald used to boil potatoes for the school children to eat at dinner time.
It was Donald who foresaw a death in the community. A religious service was being held in his house
one October evening in 1928 when the statue of the Virgin came to his house. As everyone was
kneeling and saying the rosary Donald saw hands lifting the door off it’s hinges. The following spring his
neighbour Iain Campbell aged 19 years drowned in the bay outside his house at 7 Lochcarnan and
Donald’s door was used to carry the body.

Mary was born on 29 September 1886, her parents were Ann Grieve and Donald MacInnes who moved
from Rhudhgashernish to Calternish.
Mary left home to live on the mainland. She married Donald MacPhee on 9 December 1924 in Oban
Cathedral.

Kate was born in 1886, her parents were Donald and Mary MacDonald of Lochcarnan.
Margaret MacLeod
Maggie was born in 1886, her parents were Ann MacKay and John MacLeod of Lochcarnan. Maggie’s
father died when she was a young girl, very shortly after her brother Donald was born.
Marion Johnstone (Mor Iain Johnstone)

Marion Johnstone was known as Mor. She was born at 5 Rhudhgashernish to John and Ann Johnstone
on 25 March 1887. She began her school days at the Ladies’ School, but later transferred to Carnan
Public School.
Mor worked in an ammunition factory in Glasgow during First World War and later she worked as a
herring girl, gutting fish in Shetland and Aberdeen.
She married John MacInnes from Ardmore and they lived in the family home at 5 Rhudhgashernish.
Mor and John had no children of their own but brought up three children, Jessie and Iain MacLeod and
Iain Fitzpatrick. Jessie and Iain’s mother was Mor’s niece, Mary Flora MacLeod, who had been left
behind when her family emigrated to Canada, because she had measles. Tragically both children died of
consumption when they were of school age. Mor and Iain then adopted Iain Fitzpatrick from the St
Joseph’s Home in Rutherglen.
Mor died in Uist House in 1988, she was almost 101 years old.

Roderick MacInnes was born on 22 June 1887, the son of Angus MacInnes and Margaret MacLean of
Calternish.
Ruairidh left home when he was young and went to sea. He died on board a ship in 1913 at the age of
26 years.
Donald Alexander MacDermaid (Doddie MacIarmaid)
Donald Alexander, or Doddie as he was known, was born at Sandivaig, Lochcarnan on 6 September
1887, a son of John MacDermaid and Catherine Douglas.
Doddie remained at home all his life. He married Margaret Morrison from Grenitote, North Uist and
they had one son, Roderick. Doddie died quite young and his widow, who was known as Peigi Iain
Goabh, later married John Beaton and went to live out at Bagh Clann Alasdair Caolas Luirsay. Later Peigi
moved to East Gerinish where her son Donald Beaton still lives.

Archie was born on 31 October 1887, his parents were Mary MacPherson and Donald MacDonald of
Lochcarnan.
Archie left home young to go to the mainland.

Donald was the oldest son of Samuel MacLellan and Johanna Nicholson of Sandivaig. He was born on 8
March 1888.
Doddie, as he was known locally, remained at home in Sandivaig all his life, helping crofting and fishing.
Although he became a semi invalid when he was quite young he managed to live with his disabilities and
he developed a great skill with boats and sailing. He died in Lochcarnan in the early sixties.

Mary Alexandrina Johnson (Mairi Alec Chaluim Bhain)
Mary Alec was a daughter of Malcolm Johnson and Mary MacDonald of Rhudhgashernish. She was born
on 23 August 1888.
Mary Alec left South Uist soon after finishing at Carnan Public School and went to Glasgow where she
lived the rest of her life. She married John Frazer and had two daughters. She died in Glasgow.
Donald MacInnes (Domhnall Aonghais)

Donald MacInnes was born on 30 October 1888, a son of Angus MacInnes and Margaret MacLean of
Calternish.
The old family home was on the north east shore of Loch Sheilavaig. Donald and his brothers built a
stone house on the south side of Loch Sheilavaig, at Rubh Caolas Luirsay, and went to live there. They
won the stone from near the head of the loch and carried it by boat to the close to the mouth of the
loch, they then hauled it up the shore to where the house was built. Donald later left for Glasgow where
he married Margaret Morrison from Boisdale on 23 March 1916 at Kinning Park in Glasgow; they had
five of a family. He spent most of his life at sea, he retired in his early sixties and died in Glasgow in
1967 aged 78 years.

Alexander MacEachen (Sandaidh Mor mac Iain)

Alexander MacEachen was known locally as Sandaidh Mor. He was born on 4 November 1888, a son of
John MacEachen and Ann MacLeod of Rhudhgashernish.
Sandy served in the Royal Navy during the First World War. It was during the War that he met his
younger brother Angus John in Buenos Aires harbor just before Angus John died there. Sandy Mor later
became the pier master at Lochboisdale.

Christina Ann MacPherson
Christina Ann was known locally as “Tinni”, she was a daughter of Mary Campbell and James
MacPherson who went from Iochdar to live in Sandivaig for several years before moving to the
mainland. Tinni was born on 13 February 1889.
Tinni married James Morrison on 12 October 1920 in Kinning Park in Glasgow and had a son, Angus, who
was known as “Happy Jack”.
Ann MacDonald
Ann was born on 29 March 1889, her parents were Donald MacDonald and Mary MacPherson of
Lochcarnan.
Flora MacDermaid (Flori nic Iarmaid)
Flora was born at Sandivaig, Lochcarnan on 22 August 1889, she was a daughter of John MacDermaid
and Catherine Douglas.
Flora left home soon after leaving school and settled in Glasgow. She married and had one daughter.

Donald Alexander Johnson was a son of John Johnson and Ann Johnson of Rhudhgashernish, he was
born on 21 November 1889.
After service in the First World War he married his neighbour in Rhudhgashernish, Ann MacLean (a twin
daughter of Donald MacLean and Margaret MacIntyre), and went to live in Ardmore. They had no
children of their own but brought up their niece Peggy MacLean, a daughter of Margaret Mathie and
Lachlan MacLean, Rhudhgashernish. Domhnuill Alasdair was a great story teller. He died in hospital in
Glasgow in 1979 at the age of 89 years.
Donald Alexander MacLeod
Donald was born on 13 December 1889, his parents were John MacLeod and Ann MacKay of
Lochcarnan. Ann MacLeod was widowed when Donald was a very young baby.

Mary Ann Campbell was born in Calternish in 1889, her parents were Alexander and Margaret Campbell.

Alexander Johnston (Alick Chaluim Bhain)
Alex was born in the 1876, the eldest son of Malcolm Johnston and Mary MacDonald who lived at
Rhudhgashernish point.
Alex served in the Navy in the First World War. His ship was torpedoed and afterwards he and some of
his shipmates endured 14-15 horrific days in a small boat before those who had survived the ordeal
were rescued.
Alex and his brother Roderick were the cargo agents for the cargo boats which came to Loch Carnan.
There was no large pier or berthing facility in Loch Carnan and the cargo boats came and anchored off
Gasay. Cargo of groceries, flour, paraffin, grain, etc for the north end of South Uist and Benbecula was
unloaded into the Johnson’s small boat for them to deliver to Carnan pier in South Ford and to
Creagorry for the various people who were merchants in these days.
Alex lived in the family home at the far end of Rhudhgashernish peninsula until he died on 21 September
1963 at the age of 87.
Roderick Johnston (Ruairidh Chaluim Bhain)
Roderick was born at Rhudhgashernish, the son of Mary MacDonald and Malcolm Johnston.
Roderick worked locally, mainly doing farm work and helping his brother Alex delivering the goods from
the cargo boats. When his sister Peggy died he looked after the family home. Roderick died in May
1965 at the age of 83.
Donald Johnston
Donald was a son of Mary MacDonald and Malcolm Johnston of Rhudhgashernish.
Donald served in the First World War in the Royal Navy. Afterwards he returned to life in the family
home and work the croft. He died on 11 December 1941.
Maggie Johnston
Maggie, or Peggy as she was sometimes known, was born at Rhudhgashernish, the eldest daughter of
Mary MacDonald and Malcolm Johnston.
Peggie worked in domestic service before returning home to be housekeeper for her brothers.
