Website Purpose The Purpose of this website is to establish a path of communication from the Commanding Staff of the Inspector and Instructor Staff (Active Duty Marines) and the Reserve Command to the Marines, Parents, Spouses and other family for the Marines of Detachment 2, Electronics Communication Company (Det2, ELMACO). Needs Analysis The reason why I have chosen this for my final project is due to 11 years of service with Det2, ELMACO. Proper Communication is a key necessity to the success of any organization; especially an organization who sends so many Marines on deployment thousands of miles away from their families. Many times families seek information and very rarely find someone will to share or find a valid source. For proper implementation of this site, it will need at a minimum the following assets: A Homepage A Page describing what the Marines of Det2, ELMACO do o There are many misconceptions even from family as to what our Marines do. Everyone assumes all Marines go out and shoot up things. A Page giving some general Marine Corps information o Most people do not understand the basic concepts of what the Marine Corps does and who we are… i.e. Why we’re not a part of the Army A Page giving the names of the Senior Command in case of emergency to family members A Forum where dependents and even Marines can go to and ask questions about what to expect from: o Pre-Deployment Training o While on Deployment o Post-Deployment o Pay and Promotions o Etc A Page with a link to a variety of resources designed to give information on the Marine Corps in General and Resources for Deployed Marines and their families. Goals The goal of this project is to open up lines of communication and to give the Supporting cast of the Det2, ELMACO Marines a better understanding of why to be proud of the missions their sons, daughters, spouses, mothers and fathers are doing while serving their country. Audience Characteristics There are two members of the general audience who will visit this website: Marines o The Marines are mostly interested in the information about Current Events When is Family Day? When is Drill this month? What is going on at Drill this month? o They will also be interested in the Resources and Links Marines utilize a variety of online links for doing training and planning especially prior to a deployment Family of Marines o Family Members are typically unknowledgeable about what their Marines do This site will help to educate family members on what their Marines do Help spread word on current events to the family members Help the family members to gain a better understanding of: The Marine Corps as a whole Marine Corps Rank Structure And will aid in giving them a singular place to gather information while their Marine is deployed in case of emergency Primary Audience The primary focus, or audience, is the family of a Marine. Not everyone knows what Marines do, especially when we’re talking about a Marine who is in a non-combat related job field. Better understanding of what the Marine does will put younger families at ease while their Marine travels into harms way. Secondary Audience The secondary audience will be the Marine him/herself. The Marines will typically already have the information contained within this website. However, keeping up with current events in the unit will be a nice tool. As well as, younger Marines are sometime unknowledgeable about various topics and sometimes feel overwhelmed and afraid to ask their superiors for information. This will give them a place to seek the information and become successful as they grow in the Marine Corps. Competition While there are websites for singular resources, there is no website which directly displays all of the information contained within this website. This website is a compilation of all pertinent information and resources for Marines and their families. There are things I would do differently with more time. I feel the forum section still needs a lot of work, especially in the realm of programming a script to update the information onto the page as well as a way for Marines and their Families to register for usernames on the site. Doing this would also allow for the implementation of contact from the webmaster to families or Marines. Future revisions will incorporate a less busy background image and do more research in the area of finding more resources and incorporating a script to show a thumbnail of the resource website upon mouse rollover of the link.
