Meaningful Sentence Rubric

1 = Falls Below 0 = Not Done
Vocabulary word is included (& underlined) in the sentence & used
properly. Reader knows or has a very good idea of what the
vocabulary word means by the way it is used in the sentence
(includes context clues). The sentence is clear, concise,
original, makes sense, and has details which enhance the writing. The
mechanics (punctuation, capitalization & basic spelling) are correct.

Vocabulary word is included (& underlined) in the sentence. The
student either used the word properly or in a way which isn’t
quite correct. Reader has an idea of what the word means, but may
be uncertain of its exact meaning (not enough context clues). The
sentence structure is somewhat clear, but may contain some errors.
The sentence makes sense, but could possibly be more concise and
contain more details to enhance meaning. The mechanics are well done
but have some issues.

Vocabulary word is included (& underlined) in the sentence. Sentence is
not clear or the student included the definition for the word in the
sentence. The reader has a vague idea of what the word means, but
is still unsure. There may be several basic errors (punctuation,
spelling, & capitalization) within the sentence.

Sentence is not clear and is confusing. The student may have written
a fragment or phrase instead of a sentence. Also, the student may
have simply written the vocabulary word and definition. It is difficult
for the reader to know what the vocabulary word means and word may
not be used properly. Student might not have used vocabulary word
in the sentence. There might be several errors (punctuation,
spelling, & capitalization) within the sentence.

Example Word – imminent - Definition – likely to occur at any moment; impending

the storm was imminent

The storm was imminent because it was likely to occur.
Or
The storm was imminent because it was dark.

When the surfers saw the dark clouds suddenly appear and the
water become rougher, they knew a storm was imminent.

When the surfers noticed the dark, angry clouds suddenly roll across the horizon
and heard the wind howling at their backs, they cheered for they knew a storm
was imminent which would create massive waves for them to ride.
* Other than the first sentence I purposely didn’t make punctuation, capitalization and punctuation errors.
