Meursault learns of his mother’s
death through telegram.
Inside of Meursault’s home.
Somewhere that is close to work.
Where Meursault lives at the time
without his mother.
Pg.1
Meursault meets the manager of
the people’s home and is speaking
with him about his mother.
The manager’s office in Algiers.
Meursault keeps vigilance of his
mother’s body.
In the Home at which Meursault’s
mother was in when she died. At the
Home.
While Meursault is keeping
vigilance, his mother’s friends
come to keep vigilance with him
throughout the night.
The place at which his mother is being
kept for the night. In the city Algiers,
within the old people’s home.
Meursault is on his way to
walking to the place at which his
mother is to be buried after a night
of vigil.
On the path towards walking to the
burial site.
Meursault is not very emotional to the
telegram and does not have a very
normal response to his mother’s
death. It is almost as if he does not
care too much that his mother has
passed away. His emotion is a cold
and detached one.
Meursault feels as if he is being
blamed for something that he should
not be blamed for, this makes him
feel unhappy at first but the manager
continues on with what he wants to
say and Meursault’s emotion towards
interacting with the manager changes.
He feels quite indifferent to what the
manager is saying. The manager is
speaking of his deceased mother and
yet, Meursault does not have any
passionate response to this.
Meursault’s emotion at this point is of
indifference towards his mother. He
even smokes in front of his dead
mother. Nor does he care when
someone else smokes in front of his
dead mother.
Meursault’s emotion at the point
where his mother’s friends walk in
and sit down is a little bit of
discontent, of uneasiness. He feels as
if they are judging him for not being
with his mother enough and that
creates his emotion of discontent. As
the night progresses, he analyzes the
other characters a little bit, mainly
what they are doing while keeping
vigil. He is neither friendly towards
them nor can he relate to the sadness
the other characters feel.
Meursault’s emotion can be seen as
detached here. He neither cares nor
thinks too much about his mother
while walking to his own mother’s
burial site. Instead he focuses on the
weather, the path, the nature around
him. He is indifferent towards his

The funeral is over and Meursault

mother.
Meursault’s emotion here is of
excitement. He is excited that he can
go back home and get a good night’s
sleep. This is odd because his
mother’s funeral has just ended and
while he does not care about his
mother, he cares more about his own
self. His emotion of happiness at
being able to get a good sleep is an
odd one here.

CHAPTER 2
Events
Meursault meets Marie at the
beach. They flirt and hang out
together.
Setting
At the public beach on a Saturday.
Meursault wakes up and decides
not to go to Celeste’s for
breakfast. But decides against it
because he does not want to be
questioned about his mother.
In Meursault’s home on a Sunday after
he has woken up and found that Marie
has left already.
Meursault stays at home on a
Sunday and observes the people
from the balcony of his house.
On the balcony of Meursault’s house
on a Sunday afternoon.
Emotions
Meursault’s emotion is shown
through his description of the
physical events that went on. The
emotion that he feels is of lust. He
wants Marie and he is attracted to the
physical side of their relationship.
Even though his mother died only a
little while ago the emotion of grief
cannot be seen.
Meursault is feeling annoyance at the
fact that if he goes down to Celeste’s
then he will be questioned about his
mother. He does not want any
interactions with people who are
going to ask questions about his
mother because he does not care
much about the death of his mother in
the first place.
Meurasault’s emotion was one of
amusement. He was being entertained
by watching the people go by and
imagining up stories of things of their
lives.

Emotions
The emotion that Meursault shows in
this is one of confusion. He does not
really understand why his boss is
asking what age Meursault’s mother

CHAPTER 3
Events
Meursault meets his boss at work
for the first time after his mother’s
death. He and his boss have a little
talk.
Setting
On Monday morning at Meursault’s
workplace.
Meursault meets Raymond.
Raymond speaks to Meursault
about his girl who he believes is
cheating on him.
In Raymond’s room, in the same
apartment floor as Meursault. After

was and then looking relieved that
she was around 60. And why that at
the mention of this age, it was as if
the whole conversation was over.
As Raymond explains what his
problem is to Meursault and
Meursault listens, Meursault has this
feeling of detachment. Even though
Raymond is telling Meursault a story
that should have provoked some
emotions other than cold detachment,
it is all Meursault feels. He does not
even feel that it is wrong when
Raymond explains that he hit his girl
and a random guy off the street

CHAPTER 4
Events
Meursault meets up with Marie
for the weekend.
Setting
At the beach and at Meursault’s house
on the weekend.
Salamano comes to speak with
Meursault about Salamano’s lost
dog.
In front of Meursault’s house.
Emotions
From Meursault’s interaction with
Marie, it can be seen that Meursault
enjoys the emotions of the physical
aspect. He is pleased when he and
Marie are having sex and focuses on
the physical aspect of everything.
Marie asks Meursault if he loves her
and Meursault replies “No”. This
shows that Meursault does not have
the emotion of pity. If he pitied her,
then he would have let her down
easily but he is very straightforward
in his “No”. His main emotion when
with Marie is one of enjoyment.
After Salamano speaks to Meursault
about Salamano’s lost dog, Meursault
is reminded of his mother. He, at this
point has the emotion of nostalgia.
Although it is not as strong a feeling
of nostalgia actually is. He is still
reminded of his mother and not
exactly missing her but rethinking of
the past that he has had with her.
Meursault retains still a little bit of
detachment emotion.

Emotions
When Meursault’s boss asks
Meursault if he wishes to go to
France so that he can have a new job
position, Meursault is not very
straightforward in his answer and also
not very keen on the idea of going.

CHAPTER 5
Events
When Meursault is given a job
opportunity in France from his
boss.
Setting
In the workplace after Meursault has
had a conversation with Raymond on
the phone.
Marie asks Meursault if he wishes
to marry her and Meursault is
quite frustrating in his answer to
her. He says yes, however, he says
that he does not love her.
At Meursault’s home when he is with
Marie.
Meursault goes to Celeste’s to eat
and a little woman asks to eat at
the table with Meursault together.
Not a word of conversation is
exchanged other than when the
woman asks to sit at the table.
After he and Marie have a talk about
marriage and Marie leaves. Meursault
goes down to Celeste’s to have a bite
to eat for dinner.
Salamano visits Meursault at his
home. Salamano is still sad of the
loss of his dog and mentions
Meursault’s mother towards the
end of their conversation.
Inside of Meursault’s home. Meursault
is sitting on the bed and Salamano is at
the dining table chair. This occurs on a
weekday.
His boss accuses him of not being
ambitious and this cause Meursault to
remember a time when he believes he
once was ambitious and then lost that
ambition. The emotion that he has in
this interaction is one of a very
passive emotion. He does not care for
the loss of ambition.
Marie asks Meursault if he wishes to
marry her and Meursault replies with
something along the lines of “if you
want”, this shows that he does not
care for the mental relationship with
Marie. In his emotion of being
unfeeling to anything other than a
physical relationship identifies his
relationship and all interactions with
Marie.
In this interaction, we can see the way
that Meursault reacts to a complete
stranger. Meursault feels quite a little
bit entertained by this interaction. He
even comes up with a nickname for
her as he looks over her physical
appearance in detail.
Meursault’s emotion to this
interaction can be said to taciturn. He
is not very interested in the
conversation between he and
Salamano however continues it due to
lack of anything better to do. His
emotion can be seen as very cold and
a little bit arrogant even. He just uses
Salamano as a form of entertainment
as he has none. And even when
Salamano speaks of “his poor
mother”, all Meursault does is try to
give excuse as to why he sent his
mother to a home and not have any
emotion of remorse or sadness, just
one of mild annoyance.

CHAPTER 6
Event
Meursault is walking with
Raymond and Masson when they
get into a fight with the Arabs that
have been following Raymond.
Setting
At Masson’s place when the three guys
have gone out after lunch to walk as so
to give Marie a chance to clean up
after lunch.
Emotions
Although Meursault only describes
this interaction physically, we as the
reader can see that Meursault is
feeling quite uncomfortable. He
saying that he didn’t relish the idea
and had a smoke while staring out at
the sea by him shows the emotion of
wanting to be in peace even for a
little while after a big situation that

that they were fighting with and
they get into a fight. The Arab
takes out a knife and hurts him
while Meursault shoots the Arab.
After Raymond, Marie and Meursault

happened. His emotion towards the
Arabs is quite prejudiced because
although he does not really know
them, he chooses to have an emotion
of dislike towards them since
Raymond does not like them.
Meursault’s emotion at the end of this
interaction with this Arab is one of
regret. When he says that each shot
was a “rap on the door to my
undoing” it shows that he is feeling
distressed about having shot
someone.
