May 1, 2015 Dear Parents of GT students, The GT students have attended the musical, “Flat Stanley”, and have learned about this interesting character. I would like for you to encourage your child to read the Flat Stanley books by Jeff Brown. These can be found in any library. Ms. Calandra, a second grade teacher at LPE, has the whole series of Flat Stanley books that she would be glad to loan to your child. In the stories, Stanley has many wonderful adventures, including being sent in an envelope to visit friends in California. To learn more about Flat Stanley just Google him. Check out the photo gallery. The students have made their own Flat Stanley or Flat Susie and we want to mail them off to experience their own adventures. The students and I will be tracking our adventures on maps placed in the hallway at LPE. We will continue this activity until they graduate from LPE their 5th grade year. This will be a fun and exciting way to learn geography for the whole school! There are three options to this project. We need your help. Option #1 Send Flat Stanley to a friend or relative. Please help your child address an envelope to a friend or relative that would be willing to describe and take pictures of Stanley’s/Susie’s visit to their town, state, or far off country and then mail Stanley/Susie back to you with an accounting of his/her visit. Please have them email their pictures to me at parisherk@lpisd.org. Try and pick a friend or relative who would be willing to support the educational ideas behind this project. I will be making a photo album of their adventures that you will be able to access on my LPE webpage. Attached you will find a letter to send to your friends or relatives. There will be an electronic copy of this on my webpage as well under the link, “Flat Stanley”. Feel free to copy this as many times as you would like. Please help your child fill out the greeting line. Then mail Flat Stanley and the letter to your friend or relative so Flat Stanley can begin his adventure. We want a picture or even a video from Stanley/Susie describing what he/she saw while visiting this new place. Option #2 Take Flat Stanley on an adventure yourself. I know many families will be traveling and students will want to take their Flat Stanley/Susie with them. Take pictures of your child with Flat Stanley/Susie and keep a journal of Flat Stanley’s Adventures. Bring pictures, postcards, brochures, etc. and Flat Stanley back to class when you return. When Stanley returns from his trip, I will post where he went on the map and your child may give a short presentation to the group about their trip. Option #3 Group outings for all of our Stanleys and Susies. The children have made duplicate Stanleys/Susies. I will be mailing the whole group off to experience some vacations together. A teacher at our school has a brother in the military who is going to help us in our adventure to learn about our world. If you know of people in faraway places that would be willing to have a group visit please send their information to me. Thank you for helping make this project a success for your child! Sincerely, Kathy Parisher, LPE music teacher 281-604-4774 or parisherk@lpisd.org
