Expression of Interest
Strengthening our culture is a Strategic Project led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deborah
Terry. This Strategic Project emerged from the Curtin Culture and Experience Strategy (2013) and
was initially known as the Living Our Values program.
The Steering Group is chaired by Professor Deborah Terry and its main role is to set priorities,
provide advice and support for the planning and implementation of the Strengthening our culture
program.
Three streams of work have been established for the program and are led by a Working Group
Chair, who is responsible for the planning and implementation of the stream of work. These
streams are:



Leadership (chaired by David Wood, Provost & Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor)
Staff Engagement (chaired by Ian Callahan, Vice President Corporate Services)
Systems Change (chaired by Michael Berndt, Pro-Vice Chancellor Health Sciences)
Indicative areas of focus for each stream of work can be found in Attachment 1.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities for these Working Groups are as follows:
1. Provide advice to the Strengthening our culture Steering Group.
2. Develop a program of work that will deliver on the stream objectives.
3. Ensure effective actioning and monitor progress against implementation plan.
4. Identify and address emerging issues including needs identified through Your Voice survey
and pulse checks.
5. Assist in identifying and monitoring risks and provide advice on risk prevention and
management.
6. Ensure coordination with other streams of work.
7. Be positive role models and participate actively and visibly throughout all phases of the
initiative.
This program requires the involvement of staff who wish to contribute to the implementation of
the Strengthening our culture program by expressing their interest in join the Steering Group or a
Working Group (more information in Attachment 2). Eligibility for membership to each group is
listed below and depicted in the governance model.

Time commitment
The minimum time commitment involved as a member is attendance at regular meetings1 to
actively provide input on the direction of the stream. It is also expected that members nominate
themselves to assist in the implementation of stream deliverables as well as act as role models
and disseminators of communication messages within the Curtin community.
Process
Applicants are invited to submit an Expression of Interest addressing the following criteria and
forward to culture@curtin.edu.au by 9am Tuesday 30 June 2015.
1. Brief statement answering the following question: Why do you consider your chosen
stream of work important and how would you support the work of this stream? (one to
two paragraphs).
2. Completion of the nomination form (attached) by your manager to support your
participation in the Strengthening our culture program.
Expressions of Interest will be reviewed by a Strengthening our culture panel and all applicants will
be notified of the outcomes once the selection process has been completed.

The Steering Group meets monthly. Working Group meeting frequency may vary throughout the year based on
program requirements. Currently, Systems Change and Staff Engagement are meeting fortnightly; Leadership has
established monthly meetings.

Develop values-led, ethical leadership and associated skills within Curtin’s
culture
