Self Care
There are lots of minor conditions you can treat at home with your medicine cupboard and plenty of rest.
You can treat at home:
Cold. Cough. Headache. Sore throat. Cuts and grazes. Bumps and bruises. Diarrhoea.
Medicines to have at home:
Painkillers – such as Calpol, Ibuprofen. Plasters. Anti-diarrhoea/rehydration medicines.
Bite and sting cream. Antiseptic cream. Thermometer. Cough medicine. Saline drops.
NHS 111
You can use telephone number 111 to ring NHS if you need medical help or advice urgently but not a
life-threatening situation.
By calling 111 you will be connected to a trained advisor who will be supported by experienced nurses and
paramedics. They will ask you questions to assess the symptoms and give you advice or direct you to an
available local services.
You should use this service if:
It’s not a 999 emergency. You think you may need to go to A&E or another urgent care service but are not
sure. You don’t think you can wait for an appointment with your GP. You don’t know who to ask for medical
help. If an ambulance is required, they will dispatch one immediately.
Pharmacy
The local Pharmacy can provide confidential advice and treatment for a range of common illnesses without
having to wait for a GP appointment.
Some things pharmacies can help with include:
Aches. Pains. Hay fever. Coughs. Colds. Diarrhoea. Allergies. Skin conditions. Flu jabs. Medicine advice.
Your GP
If you have an illness or injury that won’t go away make an appointment with your GP. They provide
services and when absolutely necessary can make home visits.
Some things GP’s can help with are:
Ear pain. Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea. Allergic reactions. Long-term conditions. Sore throats. Persistent
coughing. Skin conditions. High temperature. Rashes.

These offer access to treatment for a range of minor ailments.
Conditions can be treated at the Unit or Walk-in centre include:
Wounds – cuts and bruises. Bites - insect or animal. Minor burns and scalds. Strains and sprains. Eye
problems such as removal of foreign bodies, conjunctivitis. Earache (over 2 years old, under 2 years old
see your GP). Minor head injuries.
There is a minor injuries unit at North Cambs Hospital, The Park, Wisbech, PE13 3AB Tel: 01945 488068,
open Monday – Friday 8.30am-6pm.
Cannot treat babies.
Emergency Department or 999
You should only go to the Emergency Department or call 999 when it’s a critical or life-threatening
emergency. Dialling 999 and stating an emergency will result in a response vehicle being sent to your
location.
Emergency situations include:
Choking. Loss of consciousness. Open wounds. Fits. Anaphylaxis or severe allergic reactions. Breathing
difficulties. Severe burns. Head injuries.
