3. Introduction of the Board of Directors and ACPA Committees
Tim Blackmore and Darren Crichton were thanked for their contribution to the Board.
There were four openings on the Board for the coming year. Abdel Kharrat and
Maurice Shevalier were re-elected to the Board by acclamation. Two additional
nominees, Catherine Evans and Courtney Sandau were appointed to the Board as per
ACPA bylaws to fill the two remaining vacancies.
4. Review of 2011 AGM minutes. Motion to accept: Tim Blackmore. Second: Court
Sandau. Motion carried.
5. President’s report – Kathy Janzen
Highlights of the past year include:
-Executive Director – position has been advertised and we expect the successful
candidate to be hired by fall.
-Website was updated last winter. Electronic filing of PDC credits, payment of fees
and membership application is working well and seems to be well accepted by
members.
-New insurance benefits (Home and Auto and E&O) were introduced for members.
-Two successful short courses on the Chemistry of Scaling helped to cover ACPA
costs and keep membership fees down.

- Thanks to Edith Cook who completed 3 two-year terms as our Public Board
representative. Nominations for 2 new public members will be presented soon to the
Minister for approval.
- Red Deer strategic planning meeting in October 2011 was attended by 19 Board
members and guests from academia, students and industry. The following initiatives
resulted from the meeting:
• Develop information package regarding where to take supplemental
courses for PChem applicants with insufficient course work
• Develop profiles of successful PChem members
• Develop strategies to promote PChems for industry jobs
• Hold networking event and booth at the CSC2012 conference
• Promote ACPA at Industrial Chemistry sessions at the CSC2012
conference
• Develop an elevator pitch and encourage PChems to use it
• Compile an expertise inventory of chemistry professors in Alberta
• Compile list of industry contacts
• Work with University Co-op offices
• Develop an industrial internship strategy with U of C
• Conduct salary survey
• Use social media to communicate with chemists
• Develop documentation to engage first-year chemistry students
- CSC 2012, the national chemistry conference held in Calgary in May of 2012:
• Professional Ethics for Chemists – ACPA’s first short course in ethics was
successfully completed by 28 chemists
• ACPA Exhibition Booth (2.5 days of exhibiting)
• National committee meeting of Canada’s Professional Chemists (CPC) –
approved a national definition of the Practice of Professional Chemistry
• Professional Chemists “Meet ’n’ Greet” social event was cohosted with
Saskatchewan chemists.
6. Treasurer’s report – Darren Crichton
Darren provided a report outlining the income and expenses for the year end of 2011.
Our net income for 2011 was $18,452 largely thanks to the two successful short
courses held. The financial statements were successfully audited in April 2012 by
James LeBlanc and Catherine Evans.
Darren moved that his report be accepted. Second: Court Sandau. Motion carried.
7. Registrar’s report – Trent Parks
Membership continues to grow steadily. We currently have 447 members including
375 Full Members, 24 CIT Members, 13 Retired Members, 3 Associate Members and
32 Student Members.
Motion to accept: Tim Blackmore. Second: Maurice Shevalier. Motion carried.

8. Proposed Changes to ACPA Membership categories – Kathy Janzen
Currently ACPA has five membership categories. Only two, the Professional Chemist
and Chemist in Training categories, are currently regulated under the Professional
Chemists Regulation.
The following revised regulated membership categories are proposed:
• Professional Chemist (P.Chem.)
• Provisional Professional Chemist (P.Chem.Prov.)
• Registered Chemist (R.Chem.)
• Chemist in Training (CIT)
• Registered Technologist (R.T.Chem.)
• Technologist Chemist in Training (TCIT)
The changes to the membership categories and criteria are being proposed to both
increase the inclusiveness of ACPA as well as more closely align the ACPA with
other professional organizations in Alberta.
Professional Chemist (P.Chem.):
• Minimum 4-year BSc degree in chemistry that includes
• 16 single semesters of chemistry course work, of which 4
semesters are at the senior (3rd or 4th year) level
• 2 semesters of the 16 must be in each of the 4 major disciplines
(organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry)
• Minimum of four years of full-time work experience, of which at least
one year is Canadian work experience
NEW – Provisional Professional Chemist (P.Chem.Prov.):
• Minimum of 4-year BSc degree in chemistry that includes
• 16 single semesters of chemistry course work, of which 4
semesters are at the senior (3rd or 4th year) level
• 2 semesters of the 16 must be in each of the 4 major disciplines
(organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry)
• Minimum of four years of full-time work experience
• Insufficient Canadian work experience
NEW – Registered Chemist (R.Chem.):
• Minimum of 4-year BSc degree in chemistry that includes
• 14 single semesters of chemistry course work, of which 4
semesters are at the senior (3rd or 4th year) level
• 1 semester of the 14 must be in each of the 4 major disciplines
(organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry)
• Minimum of four years of full-time work experience, of which at least
one year is Canadian work experience
Chemist-in-Training (C.I.T.):
• Minimum of 4-year BSc degree in chemistry that includes the same
number of single semesters of chemistry course work as either the
P.Chem. or R.Chem. categories

• Insufficient work experience to qualify for the P.Chem. or R.Chem.
categories
NEW – Registered Technologist (R.T.Chem.):
• Minimum of 3-year BSc degree in chemistry that includes
• 12 single semesters of chemistry course work, of which 2
semesters are at the senior (3rd year) level
• 1 semester of the 12 must be in each of the 4 major disciplines
(organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry)
or
• Minimum of 2-year CTAB-accredited technical college program in
chemistry
• Minimum of two years of full-time work experience, of which at least
one year is Canadian work experience
NEW – Technologist Chemist in Training (T.C.I.T):
• Minimum of 3-year BSc degree in chemistry or
• Minimum of 2-year CTAB accredited technical college program in
chemistry
• Insufficient work experience to qualify for the R.T.Chem. category
As the minimum work experience for the P.Chem. category has been increased to four
years, it is proposed that graduate training be recognized as work experience as
follows:
• PhD degree – 2 years
• MSc degree – 1 year (but not cumulative with PhD)
• Postdoctoral positions – maximum of 1 year
Tim Blackmore moved that the new membership categories and work experience
requirements be approved as presented. Seconded by Laurier Schramm. Motion
carried.
9. ACPA Scholarships and Science Fair Awards were announced.
ACPA Scholarships:
- The ACPA Arthur Bollo-Kamara Graduate Scholarship was awarded to Zonglin
(Vincent) Yang (U. of A.).
- The ACPA Undergraduate Scholarship in Chemistry was awarded to Marie
Barnes (U. of A.)
Awards at the 2012 Edmonton Regional Science Fair:
- The ACPA Alberta Chemist Award: Kaelyn Gras for “Bisphenol A in Epoxylined Baby Formula Cans” (Archbishop McDonald High School, Edmonton).
- The ACPA Rick Dillen Memorial Award: Michael Gras and Brennan Grohn for
“Effective Effluent Expurgation Heavy Metals Removal” (Aurora Charter School,
Edmonton).

Awards at the 2012 Calgary Youth Science Fair:
- Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta Award: Sarah Erion for “Can
Arsenic Replace Phosphorus in Cells?” (Sir Winston Churchill High School,
Calgary).
- ACPA Rick Dillen Memorial Award in Chemistry: Kate Ding and Megan Chan
for “Fruit Peel Power” (Tom Baines Junior High School, Calgary).
10. Ethics Course Certificates
First ever Ethics Course offered by the ACPA on the first day of CSC2012
conference (May 26, 2012) was a success. The certificates were presented to all 28
attendees. All passed the course. ACPA acknowledged and thanked Dr. Nils Petersen
(Chemistry Dept., U. of Alberta) for being instrumental in the success of the course.
11. Frank Bachelor Award for Service to the Chemical Profession
The Frank Bachelor award presented to Laurier Schramm by Frank Bachelor.
Laurier Schramm was one of the ACPA founders, and now he is in the process of
helping Saskatchewan chemists form an association using ACPA as its model.
12. Chemist Ring Ceremony
Five ACPA members were presented with their Chemist Rings.
