The Playwright
Philip Barry (1896-1949) was a prolific playwright, and many of his works were comedies of
manners. The Philadelphia Story, arguably his best known play, was written specifically for
(rumored lady friend) Katherine Hepburn, who played Tracy Lord both on Broadway and in the
popular 1940 film, which also starred Cary Grant and James Stewart. The movie won two
Academy Awards including Best Actor for Stewart. The play was also adapted into the popular
1956 musical movie High Society starring Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby. Barry's
play Holiday (1928) was also made into a film starring Grant and Hepburn, in 1938.
And don't miss the rest of Coach House's fantastic 2011-12 season:
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, January 26-February 19
A Moon for the Misbegotten by Eugene O’Neill, March 22-April 7
Move Over, Mrs. Markham by Ray Cooney and John Chapman, May 10-June 3
