Art Students will build skills and gain knowledge of materials and processes in clay while learning basic elements of art. They will learn to hand build using pinch, slab, and coil techniques to make cups/bowls/pots/boxes and sculptures while Fee: $20 learning about design and production in clay including finishing, decorating, and glazing. Students will also learn how to research a specific culture and time in Length: 1 semester history focusing on the pottery styles and techniques they used. Students will Credit: .5 listen to demonstrations, watch videos, and use books and the internet to plan their projects. Students will use data sheets to document their designs and the glazes they used for sharing with other students. This sharing will be in the form of group critiques. There will also be an opportunity for students to give a presentation to the whole class on a specific culture and its contributions to the world, art and pottery. Pottery (ART300/301 Repeat) Prerequisite: None Smoke and Fire is an expeditionary learning experience that will include firing pottery using various kilns and techniques. Students will learn the basic handbuilding techniques of pinch, coil, and slab while using the basic elements of art Fee: $20 (line, form/ shape, space, texture, color and value). Students will learn the technique and Length: 1 semester safety for open pit firing, raku firings and other primitive firing techniques through Credit: .5 lectures, demonstrations and video. Students will keep accurate records of their design process and glazing in order to share their results with other students in group critiques. Students will learn about the effects of smoke and fire on clay and how to control those effects by deciding on which different primitive firing techniques to use for their minimum of projects. Smoke & Fire (ART303/304 Repeat) Prerequisite: None In this course, students learn basic and advanced concepts in the design, craftsmanship and fabrication in the arts of Jewelry and metalsmithing. Students will learn the elements and principles of design. Students will manipulate the basic elements of line, color and value. These elements are used in the application to the various principles of composition: rhythm, pattern, balance, tension. These are undertaken as problem-solving projects. Students will gain skills in the use of the variety of tools and equipment necessary for successful creation of jewelry and metalworking. The tools and equipment utilized in this program would be representative of those which the student would encounter in an employment situation. Students will also learn basic skills in glass fusion and beadmaking. Have fun trying photography and graphic design while creating logos, CD covers, movie posters, business cards, invitations, announcements, and other material suitable for printing. Students will also explore the creative process using digital imaging software, photography, image manipulation, and a wide variety of image generating techniques using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design, and digital cameras. Emphasis will be placed on exploration and innovative use of software tools and basic software imaging information, building a portfolio, and developing drawing skills. This is a continued study of Graphics Arts I at a more advanced level. Students will be introduced to 3-D modeling and 2-D animation concepts. Individuals will create storyboards and computer models for illustrations that are animated and still, with polygons and NURBS constructions (Flash, and MAYA-the program used to make Toy Story). Further exploration of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and In Design will be studied. Students will be given a choice of working in 2-D or 3-D graphics for a final project. Emphasis will be on the principles of art, organization, production techniques, building a portfolio, and developing drawing skills. Additional projects using Video/Audio and Web integration will also be covered. Experiment with a variety of mold making processes such as rubber silicon and plaster. Cast your images in slip resin plastics and liquid foam. Completed pieces can be painted or glazed. A final exam is given in Mold Making and Sculpture involving problem solving and demonstrations in various materials Studio Art (ART445/447 Repeat) Prerequisite: None Fee: $15 Length: 1 semester Credits: .5 Learn Basic approaches to drawing and/or painting using a variety of subject matter, including still-life, landscape, figure and fantasy. Problems presented stress perception and stylistic organization of line, space, value, texture and color. The media for this course may include the use of water colors, ink, pencil, pastels, charcoal, acrylics and oils. Students will experiment with techniques and processes. Works of major artists working in related media are studied. This course may be repeated for credit. Students will be expected to keep sketchbook and create a portfolio of their artwork throughout year. Drama The course will begin to build the fundamentals of acting. If you like “Whose Line Is It Anyway” this is the class for you! Students will master the skills associated with acting through theatre games, improvisation, pantomime, and scene work. This course is also appropriate for the more serious minded acting student, as course work will continue to build improvisational acting skills and character development techniques. This class provides intensive training in creative dramatics through advanced theatre game techniques and script analysis. Beginning Beginning Drama (ENG500) Prerequisite: None Length: 1 semester Credits: .5 Drama will focus on styles of acting, including comedy and physical humor; line delivery, character roles and scene analysis Advanced Drama (ENG510) Prerequisite: B or better in Beginning Drama or Teacher permission Length: 1 semester Credits: .5 . The course will build on the fundamentals of acting developed in the Beginning Drama class. Students advancing to this class from Beginning Drama must enter with the minimum grade of “B”. In this course, students will continue to build improvisational acting skills and character development techniques. There will also be intensive training in creative dramatics through advanced theatre games. Technical Theatre (IAR700) Prerequisite: None Length: 1 semester Credits: .5 Equivalency: .5 credit = .5 CTE and .5 Art Play Production (THA610/611 Repeat) Prerequisite: Audition or teacher permission Length: 1 semester Credits: .5 7th period class - No afterschool bus The course will introduce the student to the fundamentals of technical theater. It is designed as a "hands on" approach to working techniques, safety guidelines, and procedures for the behind the scenes aspect of play production. This course will include the opportunity for experience in: scenery construction, lighting, sound, costume make-up and mask making, property crew, running crews. Students will participate in a technical position for the selected play before the student body and the community. Minimum of 75 hours of class time afterschool and evenings. The course will introduce students to the fundamentals of play production. Students will participate in a variety of activities designed to encourage confidence, cooperation, and presentation skills. Students will master the skills associated with producing the school play; including but not limited to play structure, rehearsal techniques, set construction, and technical theatre (lights, sound, props, costume). Students will perform the selected play before the student body and the community. This class requires extensive after-school and evening time. Students will demonstrate learning through tests which evaluate understanding and mastery of theatre skills and basic knowledge. Final evaluation will be a public performance of the play selection. Students will compile a reflection notebook which includes, historical perspective, character analysis, research, costume design and a personal reflection. Musical Theatre (THA517) Prerequisite: Audition or teacher permission Length: 1 semester Credits: .5 7TH period class - No afterschool bus The course will introduce the students to the fundamentals of musical theater. Students will develop their skills in movement, voice, singing, acting and presentation for the musical theatre stage. Students will work with a director, choreographer, vocal director and live orchestra. Students will perform the selected play before the student body and the community. This class requires extensive after-school and evening time. Students will demonstrate learning through tests which evaluate understanding and mastery of musical theatre skills and basic knowledge. Final evaluation will be a public performance of the musical theatre selection. Students will compile a reflection notebook which includes, historical perspective, character analysis, research, costume design and a personal reflection. Back to top Music Symphonic Band (MUS121/122) Prerequisite: Prior experience needed Length: 2 semesters/year long Fee: $5 per year Credits: .5 per semester Symphonic Band is a preparatory ensemble for Wind Ensemble and is the first level of band in our wind band sequence. Course content includes rehearsals, sectionals, performances, festival adjudications, guest conductors and performers, and travel, all based in the preparation and study of a variety of wind band repertoire. Students must commit to preparation of their parts, working on both the technical and artistic aspects of their musicianship in order to experience higher levels of complexity and beauty in music. Learning will be assessed through performances (in and out of class), playing tests, discussions, written work, etc. Wind Ensemble is the highest level of large wind band available. Audition or instructor permission is required. Course content includes rehearsals, sectionals, Prerequisite: Audition or Teacher permission performances, festival adjudications, guest conductors and performers, and Length: 2 semesters/year long travel, all based in the preparation and study of the highest quality wind band repertoire available. Length: 2 semesters/year long Students must be able to prepare their parts on their own with little or no help from the instructor and will most often be the only person on their part. This ensemble teaches students a variety of big band jazz styles and performs extensively in the school and community. Students must commit to preparation of their parts, working on both the technical and artistic aspects of their musicianship in order to experience higher levels of complexity and beauty in music. Students awaken their desire for improvisation and learn to express ideas through music. Learning will be assessed through performances (in and out of class), playing tests, discussions, written work, etc. Jazz Ensemble 1 is the highest level of jazz band available. This nationally recognized ensemble teaches students a variety of big band jazz styles and performs extensively in the school, community, and nation. The literature often requires students to draw upon their different realms of knowledge, abilities, and experience in order to perform the music at the level of sophistication required. Learning will be assessed through performances (in and out of class), playing tests, discussions, written work, etc. The Concert Orchestra is a string orchestra that focuses on medium to advanced repertoire. Students will work on improving playing techniques and developing skills necessary for membership in the Chamber Orchestra. Private lessons are strongly encouraged. Members are required to participate in all rehearsals, concerts and programs at which the group performs. Members will be able to demonstrate their ability and technique through various concerts and performances throughout the year. The Chamber Orchestra plays advanced string repertoire. Membership is by audition only and students are strongly encouraged to take private lessons. The students focus on advanced musical skills to prepare them for post-high school orchestra auditions. Members are required to participate in all rehearsals, concerts and programs at which the group performs. Members will be able to demonstrate their ability and technique through various concerts and performances throughout the year. Chamber Choir is a choral ensemble suitable for students who are motivated to learn to sing and perform. Chamber Choir performs a variety of quality choral music, including vocal jazz and traditional choral literature. Students are required to provide the required uniform and attend all performances and activities. Participation in rehearsals and performances and quizzes of musical elements are used to evaluate students. Accents/Women's Vocal Ensemble (MUS360/361) Prerequisite: Audition or Teacher permission Length: 2 semesters/year long Fee: $15 per year + Performing Uniform Credits: .5 per semester required uniform and accessories. Students are required to attend all rehearsals, performances, tours, festivals, and competitions throughout the year. Girls are required to provide the required uniform and accessories. In addition to the $5 printing fee, students are required to pay for assorted field trips. Assessment is by a variety of methods, including rubric scoring, performances, participation throughout the year. Girls are required to provide the Dynamics Vocal Jazz Ensemble is a premier vocal jazz choir that performs in concerts, festivals, and competitions throughout the Northwest. Students are required to provide the mandatory uniform and accessories and attend all performances and activities that the group is engaged in. Dynamics performs a variety of quality choral literature, depending on the season. In addition to the $5 printing fee, students are required to pay for assorted field trips. Learning will be assessed in a variety of methods, including rubric scoring, participation in class & In this course we learn how rock music has evolved from the early part of the 20th Century and the important part it has played in our society. Class includes a lot of music listening, some student-generated projects, and gobs of assorted rock and roll trivia nuggets. Assessment includes rubric scoring of class presentations, individual projects and tests. This course is for anyone who wishes to either begin to learn how to play a guitar, continue their learning, or for advanced players to simply get credit for playing guitar. Credit will be based on completion of assigned curriculum. All levels of players are welcome. The curriculum is not designed for bass guitar. Students will be assessed by rubric scoring of their playing performance. There will be some written tests involving guitar chord identification and basic music theory.
