This post is based within the School of Dentistry where you will be part of the team that delivers an efficient
and effective dental and maxillofacial radiography service across the University and NHS interface in Leeds.
With a BSc in Diagnostic Radiography, DCR or equivalent (Diagnostic) State Registration (HCPC) you will
participate in the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate dental students, dental hygiene
and dental therapy students, qualified and student radiographers, radiography assistants and other Dental
Care Professionals.
With a sound knowledge of clinical practice and a willingness to participate in clinical audit you will have strong
interpersonal skills and be able to forge effective relationships with colleagues, service users and students.
Providing excellent patient care, and up to date with the latest developments in the field you will be able to
make your own decisions and work on your own initiative , whilst being comfortable working in an environment
of ongoing change.
University Grade 6 (£25,769 - £30,738) depending on qualifications and relevant experience

Purpose of the post




Undertake all the professional and technical requirements of the post as a state-registered radiographer
with the Health Professions Council (HPC), while working as an autonomous practitioner within the Leeds
Dental Institute.
To be part of the team that delivers an efficient and effective radiography service.
To assist in the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate dental students, qualified and
student radiographers, dental hygiene and dental therapy students and radiography assistants.
To act as a source of expertise to clinicians/other hospital staff within and outside the Radiology
Department.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Operational Duties















Provide an effective and efficient service for all users whilst ensuring optimum patient care.
Undertake the supervision of assistant practitioners and support staff within the department.
Manage resources with agreed constraints and limits.
To be willing to perform out of hour’s duties, as appropriate, linked to teaching demands.
Responsible for the monitoring and assessment of the environment, documenting and taking appropriate
action to identify and reduce risks.
Participate in a QA programme for equipment and techniques.
Participate in the selection process of new/replacement equipment for the department and satellite areas.
Collaborate with the radiologists and other clinical staff in clinical decisions relating to the choice and
execution of x-ray examinations.
To review own images (and those produced by others), to ensure that supplementary imaging procedures
are undertaken (where appropriate) prior to patient departure from the department.
Take radiographs of specimens from the Oral Pathology Department.
To process all types of digital and film images.
To care for and maintain all processing equipment as and when required.
To be able to mix chemistry and replenish all processing machines.
To copy radiographs when required.
To undertake reception and clerical duties as and when required.
Educational Duties









Actively undertake and maintain personal CPD, professional training, education and participate in own
performance appraisal.
Demonstrate active commitment to the development of assistant practitioner and support staff, assist with
their practical training and education and support their development needs.
Be aware of innovations in techniques, equipment and applications in the field of radiography, introducing
new techniques and developments where appropriate.
To provide daily supervision of all students.
To undertake small group teaching in phantom head work (intra-oral radiography) and extra-oral
radiography.
To participate in the ongoing assessment of undergraduate students within the LDI.
To prepare handouts and teaching materials to be used within the department and in Outreach Clinics.
To teach other qualified staff in the speciality of Dental Radiography
To demonstrate and encourage the highest professional and technical standards in dental and
maxillofacial radiography using personal example, support and constructive supervision.
Information and Record Keeping


Be fully competent in the operation of the hospital PAS and other associated computerised systems
(CRIS).
Record own patient information and data and that of other junior staff as required by professional and
departmental guidelines/legislation.
Quality




Monitor, review and revise radiographer based clinical practice in accordance with clinical governance
principles.
To undertake regular audit projects, critically evaluating the results, suggesting any change in practice
indicated by the data and implementing change (as appropriate) thus promoting evidence based practice.
To act as a point of advice for patient enquiries regarding their referral, for all issues relating to hospital
attendance, for example Radiation Protection Issues, Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS),
Interpretation Services and Hospital Transport.

Professional










To provide a source of clinical and technical expertise/expert knowledge relating to general dental and
maxillofacial radiographic practice when consulted by clinicians, general dental practitioners, general
practitioners and other staff from within and outside the Radiology Department.
To act as a “Practitioner” under IR(ME)R 2000, assessing the justification for radiology referrals.
To liaise with external agencies when there is a suspicion that a patient is in danger eg. the child
protection team or the police.
To effectively manage a varied, unpredictable and complex caseload of patients whilst undergoing
frequent interruptions.
To be aware of and comply with all standards of conduct, dress codes and patient care that relate to
radiography and act within the approved guidelines of the Trust.
To co-operate with all policies and procedures designed to ensure equality of employment. Co-workers,
patients and visitors must be treated equally irrespective of gender, ethnic origin, age disability, sexual
orientation, religion etc.
To respect patient confidentiality at all times and not divulge patient information unless sanctioned by the
requirements of the role.
Be aware of Health and Safety and COSHH regulations, maintain safe working practices and ensure the
Health and Safety policies of the hospital are implemented, ensuring all work activities comply.
Comply with systems of work, local rules, policies and procedures in accordance with current ionising
radiation regulations.
Undertake all mandatory training required for the role, including regular updates in Fire Safety, Moving and
Handling and CPR, as required by Dental Radiology and Trust Health and Safety Policies.

Provide liaison and co-ordination of the service for patients, with wards/departments, other hospitals and
GDP practices.

received distressing news.
Possess the skills and experience to explain to patients the reasons for performing an examination
including benefits, risks and limitations of the procedure in terms that they understand.
The ability to gain acceptance of intimate procedures in the mouth, especially when there may be barriers
to understanding (eg. dementia, hearing or sight impairment, social, cultural or behavioural issues).

Post Dimensions





There are two Consultant Radiologists within the Department.
The department currently employs: 1.0 WTE Band 7 Superintendent Radiographer; 1.0 WTE Specialist
Registrar; 1.0 WTE Band 7 Deputy Superintendent Radiographer; 1.0WTE Band 6 Radiographer; 2.0
WTE Band 4 Dental Nurses, 1.5 WTE Band 2 Radiography Assistant.
Patient referrals are from out patients, in patients, general dental practitioners, general medical
practitioners and other hospitals.
Patients may be uncooperative or with physical and/or mental disability. Some patients exhibit
antisocial or threatening behaviour.
The appropriate education, training and mentoring is provided yearly for undergraduate dental
students; postgraduate dental students; dental hygiene and therapy students; student dental nurses;
radiography students and radiographers from other departments/hospitals requiring updates in dental
radiography.
Health and Safety/Risk Management

All staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of
services provided to our patients and other service users. This includes complying at all times with the
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies.
Special Working Conditions








The role involves frequent exposure to body fluids (saliva) and odours in a windowless environment.
Standing for long periods of time while teaching students.
Dealing with frequent interruptions whilst maintaining a high level of concentration and professionalism.
Performing intimate procedures (e.g. working in the mouth).
Occasional working alone.
The post involves work with VDU’s and associated computer equipment.
Verbal and physical abuse may be encountered.
Possible exposure to latex products.
Key Responsibilities
You will be directly responsible to the appropriate Head of Dental Radiology, through whom you will be
accountable to the Dean of the School of Dentistry.
