We’re proud to have finished first, and we will continue to work hard to give you quality

Message from the students’ association president:
Hey there Mohawk!
My name is Luke Baylis and I am the President of the Mohawk Students’ Association. You’re
probably wondering, what’s the MSA; well, let me tell you!
The Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA) is your Student Government body on campus. We
are an elected Board of Directors whose sole purpose is to enhance your student experience
while at Mohawk College. As student leaders, we advocate on your behalf, always trying to
understand the needs of the student population, to provide suitable solutions to help
students succeed both in and out of the classroom. Your MSA is also your political advocate
on a Federal, Provincial, Municipal and School level. We listen to the student voice and then
act to represent you, making important decisions that affect yourselves and future students.
Your MSA reinvests your student activity fees into meaningful services, exciting events,
awesome facilities and advocacy that matter to students. From services such as our
student food bank and legal counseling to events such as concerts and pub nights, the MSA
is here for you! We also operate your Student Centre (G-wing at Fennell) which includes
the MSA office, a student operated food court, two campus bars, a quiet study lounge and
many more areas for student enjoyment.
You’ve picked a great College to come to, and I can say that from personal experience. I’ve
thoroughly enjoyed my time here and I believe you will as well. If you need anything at all,
the MSA is here to support you.
Take care for now and I’ll see you in the halls.
Luke Baylis
MSA President

Admissions & registrations:
Registration and Timetable Selection
Select your courses online when your program registration opens. Days and times to select
your timetable will be posted on MOCOmotion, so you will know when you can access your
timetable. If you don’t have access to a computer, or if you require assistance, visit The
Square at any campus.
Course Adds/Transfers
After the “add period” opens, and until the 10th day of your program’s semester, you may
add a course to your registration online, provided the course is in your program of studies,
prerequisites have been met, and there is room in the course. You may also transfer to
another section of a course up to the 10th day of your program’s semester, provided there
is room in the section. To see the registration dates for the upcoming term, go to
MOCOmotion, My Student Account Tab, Under NEW or Returning Post Secondary Students
and click on Important Registration Dates.
Course Drops
You may drop a course from your online registration within the first 10 days of your
program semester and have the record removed from your transcript. You may also drop a
course online up to the end of the 10th week of the semester and have a “W” grade
(withdrawn) indicated on your transcript. Please consult with your academic department
before you drop courses, since you may impact your progress through your program of
study. Your OSAP eligibility may also be affected. To see the add/drop dates for the
upcoming semester, go to MOCOmotion, click on the My Student Account Tab, and look at
the Welcome to My Student account and select new or returning student.
Change of Address
Keep your address updated by changing your information online. Go to MOCOmotion and

Experience
Prior learning can be acquired through informal study, work and life experiences not
recognized by formal transfer of credit mechanisms. Credit earned through the PLAR
process recognizes past accomplishments, and may reduce the amount of time required to
complete a certificate or diploma. Depending on the course, learning may be accessed
through a portfolio (documented evidence) and/or a challenge process (exam; assignment).
Contact the Prior Learning Assessment Office at 905.575.2395 for more information.
Transcripts
The Square will provide official transcripts of your final grades at your request. For more
information, visit MOCOmotion and request a transcript in My Student tab.

Financial Assistance
The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)
Students attending a full-time day program and who are Canadian citizens, have Permanent
Resident or Protected Person status may apply for financial assistance through this
government-funded program. OSAP is comprised of Canada and Ontario student loans and
grants, and is designed to supplement a student’s own resources and expected
parental/spousal contributions.
OSAP funding is calculated by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities based upon
information provided by the student, their parents or their partner. Reviews may be
considered if students have exceptional circumstances not considered in the standard
assessment of need.
The online OSAP application is a fast and easy way to apply, and includes built-in error
checks. Once the application is submitted, follow the onscreen prompts to review what
documentation is required to complete your application.
OSAP documentation such as signature pages can be uploaded directly to the OSAP website
or may be returned to The Square, Room C102, Fennell Campus or to the Student Services
Office at your campus. New students will also be prompted to print a Master Student
Financial Assistance Agreement (MSFAA). The MSFAA must be taken to a designated
Canada Postal Outlet. You will need to bring proof of your Social Insurance Number and one
piece of government-issued photo ID. You should also bring personal banking information
with you.
The OSAP application, status updates, assessments breakdowns and a list of required
documentation can be accessed through osap.gov.on.ca

STUDENT HEALTH benefits
To help Mohawk Students pay for the health services they need, the MSA has partnered
with StudentCare in order to provide students with extended health and dental coverage.
The plan is designated specifically for students to cover many services not covered by
provincial or basic health-care plans.
More information about the Plan is available at www.ihaveaplan.ca, or by calling the
Member Services Centre at 1.866.416.8705, Mon-Fri from 9 am to 5 pm.
Who is covered?
All full-time Mohawk College students paying full activity fees in September, January, or
May are automatically covered by the Plan.
What is covered and how much does it cost?
HEALTH – Over $10,000
Prescription drugs, tuition insurance, health practitioners (such as chiropractors,
physiotherapists, massage therapists), ambulance, medical equipment, and more…
VISION – Up to $350
Eye exams, eyeglasses or contact lenses, laser eye surgery.
TRAVEL – Up to $5,000,000
120 days per trip, $5,000,000 per incident, plus trip interruption and trip cancellation in the
event of a medical emergency.
DENTAL – Up to $750
Checkups, cleanings, fillings, root canals, gum treatments, extractions, and more…
The total cost of the plan is $180.00 for full-year coverage (Sept. 1 – Aug. 31).
What if I already have health and dental coverage?
If you’re covered by another extended plan (i.e. parent’s or spouse’s employee plan), you
can combine both plans to maximize your overall coverage and reduce or eliminate out-ofpocket expenses. You may also choose to opt out of the MSA Health & Dental Plan and
receive a credit for the amount of the Plan shortly after the end of the Change-of-Coverage
Period. All opt outs must be completed within the appropriate Change-of-Coverage Period.
The first time you opt out, you will need to provide proof of other equivalent health and
dental coverage.
Visit www.ihaveaplan.ca and follow the on-screen instructions for opting out.
You’re responsible for paying all college fees within the prescribed deadlines, even if you are
opting out of the MSA Health & Dental Plan.
Can I enrol my spouse or dependants?
Eligible students may enrol their spouse and/or dependent children in the Plan by paying an
additional fee, over and above their fee as a member of the Plan. Common law and samesex couples are eligible. Visit www.ihaveaplan.ca and follow the on-screen instructions for
enrolments, which can only be processed within the Change-of-Coverage Period.
Change-of-Coverage Period
Students can opt out or enrol their family during the following periods only:
For students starting in September:
Sept. 9 – Oct. 2, 2015
For new students starting in January:

information & technology
As a Mohawk College student, a variety of information technology resources and services
are available to support you in your academic endeavours. These include:
MOCOmotion Your online information portal
MOCOmotion is the Mohawk College web portal and your gateway to College services and
information customized to meet your needs. Login to mocomo.mohawkcollege.ca and get
secure access to campus services like registration and fee information, timetables, grades,
parking applications, locker selection, College email, etc. Make regular visits to MOCOmotion
to read announcements and discover what’s happening on campus and in your courses.
As a post-secondary student, you would have received your MOCOmotion user ID and
password in the acknowledgement letter following receipt of your application or on your fee
statement. Generally, your MOCOmotion username will be your firstname.lastname (e.g.
john.smith) unless someone already has that username, in which case, a number will be
added to the end of your last name. A temporary password is assigned, and you will be
prompted to change it when you first log in.
If you experience technical problems or require a password reset, please call the IT Help
Desk (available Monday to Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.) at 905.575.2199 or
Toll Free 1.866.601.8445. Please have your ONE CARD ready.
Did you know?
Your MOCOmotion username and password are your IT identity and key to College online
resources and services, such as your email account and wireless network.
I.T. Service Desk
Laptops and a variety of audio-visual equipment may be borrowed by Mohawk students for
class presentation and course assignment purposes at no charge, or for a nominal fee. All
you need is a valid Mohawk College student ID – known as your ONE CARD!

Document Cameras
…Plus much more!
Located at the Information Technology Service Desk in Room C118 of the Fennell Campus.
Wireless Network
The Mohawk College wireless network allows students and staff to access the Internet and
network resources, such as email and the web, without having to plug in a network cable.
Wireless access points have been installed at all campuses making wireless connectivity
available in many public meeting spaces such as libraries, study lounges, cafeterias and
even outdoor common areas at some campuses.
At Fennell and Stoney Creek campuses, you will need your Mohawk College email address
and password as the credentials to access and authenticate on the wireless network with
SSID “Mohawk-WiFi.” The connection instructions are shown in the following link:
http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/studentservices/ help-desk-computer-access/mohawk-email/
mohawk-wifi.html. The SSID “Mohawk-1” is maintained for users with compatibility issues.
It requires a Pre-Shared Key of “Mohawk123” and requires your MOCOmotion username and
password.
At the IAHS at McMaster Campus, Mohawk College students can access the McMaster
University wireless network.
Before using Mohawk or McMaster’s wireless networks, you should ensure that you have upto-date anti-virus software, a personal firewall and also applied the latest Windows Updates
to your mobile computer. Not doing the updates regularly may leave your computer open to
risks or even prevent a wireless connection from working at all.
All such persons accessing and using College wireless resources are subject to the
applicable provisions of the Information Technology — Use and Security Policy CS–1502–
2002.
Email with Outlook Web Access
All Mohawk students automatically have an email account with the college created at the
same time as their MOCOmotion account. Your email address
firstname.lastname@mohawkcollege.ca - unless someone already has that address - in
which case, a number will be added to the end of your last name. Your email password
would be the same as your MOCOmotion password.
Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) is the College’s Student email system, which can be
accessed through a web browser both on and off campus. OWA can be accessed by clicking
on the email icon inside MOCOmotion, or by directly logging in at webmail.
mohawkcollege.ca
Email can also be configured on smartphones and tablets using ActiveSync. More
information can also be found at http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/email
Important Reminders
Computer equipment and other information technology facilities are a shared resource and
intended for use by students currently enrolled in courses, as well as, College faculty, staff
and alumni. When using the resources, especially during peak periods, you are required to
give priority to academic course work rather than for entertainment purposes and to cooperate in sharing the use of the facilities for the benefit of the College community.
As a member of the Mohawk College community, your access to the network and computing
resources of the College includes both benefits and responsibilities. You are required to use
computing and information resources responsibly and to guard against abuses. Responsible
and appropriate use of Mohawk College’s information technology resources requires that all
users:
-
-
Take responsibility for the integrity of the resources under their control;
Respect copyrights, software licences, intellectual property rights and contractual
agreements;
Respect the rights of others, including privacy of person-to-person communications
and privacy of personal data;
Not use information technology resources to access, create, view, listen to, store or
transmit material that is harassing, obscene, abusive, illegal, pornographic,
discriminatory or that otherwise violates applicable laws, Mohawk College policies or
community standards;
Not tamper with files, passwords or accounts of others, or misrepresent their identity
as a sender of messages or the content of such messages;
-
-
Not intentionally develop programs or make use of already existing programs that
harass other users, or infiltrate a computer or computing system, or damage or alter
the software components of a computer or computing system, or gain unauthorized
access to other facilities accessible via the network;
Not use information technology services or facilities for non-College activities,
commercial or other external purposes not sponsored by the College.

off campus housing
Up to date online services, listings and useful tips for living in the community are available
to students throughout the year at Fennell and Stoney Creek Campuses.
When living off campus, Mohawk College students have certain responsibilities and
obligations as tenants in the neighbourhood. You need to be aware that there are several
municipal bylaws in the city of Hamilton relating to excessive noise, parking restrictions, and
property standards such as garbage removal, lawn maintenance, and snow clearing. As a
student living in these rented properties, you have the responsibility of obeying these
bylaws.
Mohawk College expects students to represent the College well in the way they live and act
in the community. Students, whether on or off campus, are members of the Mohawk
College community, with both the rights and responsibilities that College membership
involves.
Good actions by students ensure quality standards of housing for Mohawk College students
living in the community.

Lockdown Procedures
“Lockdown” and “Hold and Secure” are emergency measures used to protect people inside a
building from a dangerous situation taking place either inside or outside the building.
Notes:
1. Lockdown announcements will be initiated by Security and will be communicated by
a pre-recorded message played over the building speaker system at Fennell and
Stoney Creek Campuses
2. Lockdown procedures at the IAHS at McMaster are developed by McMaster University
and may be different. Students must familiarize themselves with these site specific
procedures
3. A lockdown practice drill will always be preceded by an announcement in advance of
the drill. If no announcement precedes a lockdown signal, assume that the lockdown
requirement is real
Lockdown

A situation where there is a direct threat to the safety and well-being of the College
community such as a shooter, a hostage situation, or a terrorist attack.
Threat Inside the Building – Lockdown
This response would occur where there is a direct threat to the safety and well-being of the
College community such as a situation involving an individual armed with a knife, a gun, or
explosives, a hostage situation or a terrorist attack.
Upon Hearing the Voice Message Advising Lockdown



Exit all Common and Open Areas (including Library and Cafeteria)
Disperse…do not congregate in open areas
Exit the building or go to a room or area where you feel safe to enter
If Exit is Not Possible








Enter or stay in a room or area where you feel safe
Close and secure doors if possible
Turn off lights
Cover windows and/or stay away from windows
Silence cell phones/use text messaging only
Stay alert, quiet and out of sight
Disregard fire alarm signal unless in immediate danger
Do not exit until “All Clear” signal is heard
End of Lockdown
A recorded announcement of an “All Clear” signal will be given to indicate the end of
lockdown. Emergency officials or College Security will conduct a door-to-door confirmation
of this announcement.
Threat Outside the Building Hold and Secure
This type of lockdown could arise from police action, an environmental hazard or weather
related activity outside the College that poses no direct threat to people inside the building.
In this case, the College would conduct business as usual but all entrances to the College
would be locked. This action would deny access to the building from the outside:





The threat is outside and everyone remains inside the building
Notification will be communicated by a voice message
Remain in the building until emergency officials advise that it is “All Clear” to leave
Security staff is responsible for locking and securing all exits/entrances
Security staff is responsible for monitoring the main entrance and admitting only
authorized personnel into the building for the duration of the Hold and Secure
lockdown
Note: If any threat is viewed or perceived, call College Security immediately at extension
55, extension 88 at IAHS at McMaster, or call 911.
The goal of a lockdown is to remove yourself from the area of immediate threat, go to a
secure area and remain out of sight.
