BDI-2 TIPS from Osceola
Administering the BDI-2
BDI-2 TIP #1: Screener: If the raw score is equal to or less than the cut score, it is a REFER
BDI-2 TIP #2: Screener: REFER /sub-domains
Be sure to do ALL sub-domains within any single domain if child receives a REFER on the screener
DOMAINS: SUB-DOMAINS:
ADAPTIVE
Self-care (SC)
Personal Responsibility (PR)
PERSONAL-RESPONSIBILITY
Adult Interaction (AI)
Peer Interaction (PI)
Self-Concept and Social Role (SR)
COMMUNICATION
Receptive Communication (RC)
Expressive Communication (EC)
MOTOR
Gross Motor (GM)
Fine Motor (FM)
Perceptual Motor (PM)
COGNITIVE
Attention and Memory (AM)
Reasoning and Academic Skills (RA)
Perception and Concepts (PC)
BDI-2 TIP # 3: Screener: Total Cut Score on the SCREENER
The TOTAL cut score on the screener is NOT the total of the cut scores for each domain. You must look on
the Cut Score chart ( p 228 in the Manual) to determine the Total Cut Score. Do NOT add the column of cut
scores.
You DO add the column of raw scores to get a total Raw Score. Add carefully. Use a calculator if needed.
BDI-2 TIP #4: Screener: Adding raw scores
Take your time and be careful adding the raw scores on the screener. If raw scores on the screener are
added incorrectly, it may change a PASS to a REFER or vice versa
BDI-2 TIP #5: Age Equivalent
Note: "Age Equivalent" (AE) refers to the age the child is functioning at based upon the results of the
assessment. It is NOT the same thing as the child's chronological age (CA). (In some cases, it may happen to
be the same number, but not necessarily.)
Examples:
Child is 4 years and 2 months old, giving him a CA of 50 months, but his skills indicate that he is functioning at
5 years old, 0 months....giving him an AE of 60 months.
BDI-2 TIPS from Osceola
Child is 3 years old (CA is 36 months), and functioning at a 3 year 0 months level giving him an AE of 36
months.
Child is 3 years old (CA is 36 months), but functioning at a 2 year, 2 month level, giving him an AE of 26
months.
BDI-2 TIP #6: Going in reverse to get a Basal
** Start point must be at the beginning of the child's chronological age (or younger) but NEVER older
** When going in reverse to establish the basal, be sure to continue in reverse until you have three consecutive
scores of "2"...even if this means going in reverse all the way to item #1.....If this happens, a ceiling (three
consecutive "0's") may also be established, so double check before continuing with the test
BDI-2 TIP #7: 6-month intervals
When testing the children MOVING UP to kindergarten: Please look at the date of the previous testing...there
needs to be a 6 month interval between tests...ex. First test given 10/20/2011...next test not before
4/20/2012...it can be any time after, but not before 4/20/2012
When testing children STAYING in Pre-K ESE in the fall.... keep the testing with a 6 month interval as much as
possible, but we have some flexibility if it is a week earlier than 6 months (Please no more than one week
earlier than the 6-month interval). These scores are NOT reported to DOE...they are for our progress
monitoring.
Sharing protocols/reports
BDI-2 TIP #8: Within county transfers
If you have the BDI-2 protocols and/or reports for students who you once had, but who have transferred to
another school within the county, please email their names to me and forward them to me. I will get them to
the new teacher. (If you know what school they went to, send them directly to the new teacher.)
