My beef cattle herd management project checklist
Running a beef cattle herd management project involves careful planning. Before you start, it is important to
understand the feasibility of your project, how you will run your project, how you will set up record keeping
and monitoring systems, and the options for selling your Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) earned from
your project. Use this checklist to help you get started and stay on track.
Before applying to register your project
 Do you understand how the scheme works?
 Have you established that your project is feasible?
 What kind of service providers will you need?
 Can you meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act
2011 (the Act) and the beef cattle herd management method?
 Do you have evidence of legal right or approval to run the project from the owner of the legal right?
 Do you understand your legal obligations?
 Do you know which activities you will implement and how, to lower cattle emissions intensity?
 Have you selected the business operation for the herd as explained in the Act and explanatory
statement?
 Do you know how to find a category 2 greenhouse and energy auditor?
 What systems will you put in place to monitor your project and record information needed for reporting
and auditing?
 Do you understand the options for selling your ACCUs?
Register your project
 Have you set up a client portal account?
 Do you have all the information required for your Fit and Proper Person test application?
 What is your project’s forward abatement estimate?
 What reporting periods will you nominate?
 What will you include in your detailed description of how the activities you have chosen will lower cattle
emissions intensity? (see Table 1 in the Explanatory Statement as an example)
 What business operation you will use?
 Have you addressed all the additional information required as stated in sections 10, 11, 12 and 13 of the
method?
 Have you opened an Australian National Registry of Emissions Units (ANREU) account?

Set up and run your project
 When will you commence implementation of your selected activity or activities?
 What data inputs do you need to collect for the herd management calculator?
 Have you engaged a category 2 greenhouse and energy auditor so you can meet your audit schedule?
 How will you make sure your project report and application for ACCUs is prepared and submitted to the
Clean Energy Regulator within six months after the end of each reporting period? Please note: the Clean
Energy Regulator has 90 days to assess project reports and applications for ACCUs.
