Speaker Biographies
Dr Elaine Atkins (Programme Leader MSc Orthopaedic Medicine Middlesex University)
“Going backwards to go forwards”.
Elaine Atkins qualified at St Thomas’ Hospital in 1973 and has followed a musculoskeletal
physiotherapy path since, entering private practice in 1980. She has been teaching with the Society
of Orthopaedic Medicine for over twenty years and having gained a master’s degree in postgraduate
education and training, has been instrumental in developing the Society’s educational pathway to
master’s level, collaborating with Middlesex University to develop the first dedicated MSc
Orthopaedic Medicine, of which she is Programme Leader. She has a doctorate in professional
studies (orthopaedic medicine education), is Module Leader for the ‘Advanced Clinical Practice in
Orthopaedic Medicine’ module and is co-author of the textbook ‘A Practical Approach to Orthopaedic
Medicine’, now in its third edition.
Dr Peter Malliaras (Consultant Physiotherapist)
Advances in the Physiotherapy Management of Tendonopathies.
Peter is an experienced physiotherapist who has worked with elite athletes at the Victorian Institute of
Sport (Australia) as well as National and International level football, volleyball and basketball players
and Commonwealth and Olympic track and field athletes. Over almost the past decade, he has
devoted his clinical and research time to the management of tendinopathy, completing his PhD in this
area and working with some of the worlds leading tendon clinicians, including Nicola Maffulli, Hakan
Alfredson and Jill Cook. Currently Peter divides his time between tendon research, practicing as a
Consultant Physiotherapist in the NHS and private sector and holding the position of Senior Clinical
Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary, University of London.
Dr Tom Crisp (Consultant Sports Physician)
The Role of High Volume Injections in the Management of Tendinopathies.
Tom is a full time Specialist in Sport & Exercise Medicine being just the second doctor in UK to be
placed on the Specialist Register of General Medical Council as a sports physician. He has over 30
years of experience working in sports medicine, including time spent as Chief Medical Officer at
Olympic, Paralympic and World University Championships.
He is now a member of the International Medical Commission of FISU (International University
Sports Federation) supervising World Games and Championships around the world in many different
sports. Currently he is carrying out research into new and effective treatments for Achilles
tendinopathy at London Independent Hospital
Mr John Yeh (Consultant Neurosurgeon)
Spinal Injection Therapy- Application in Clinical Practice.
John Yeh is a highly experienced Consultant Neurosurgeon. He qualified in 1989 and has spent
many years to become well respected within the specialty. He is a member of the Society of
British Neurosurgeons and the British Cervical Spine Society. John has many fields of clinical interest
including pain, nerve entrapment, spinal disc surgery, spinal fusion surgery, microsurgery, cranial
surgery and particularly spinal injections.
Pip White (CSP Professional Adviser)
Physiotherapy: Embracing Prescribing & Medicines use.
Pip White qualified in Physiotherapy in 1991 from Sheffield Hallam University and pursued a clinical
career in the NHS, the Ministry of Defence (Royal Air Force) and elite sport ,ending up as an ESP in
MSK practice. Pip is currently completing her Healthcare Law degree at Salford Law School.
In 2003, Pip joined the CSP and worked on revising the Standards of Physiotherapy Practice
(published 2005) and the revised interpretation of the Scope of Physiotherapy Practice (published
2008) and continues to develop the Society’s interpretation of physiotherapy scope of practice.
Pip is lead adviser for the CSP’s Professional Advice Service and advises members on a range of
professional practice issues with an emphasis on enquires requiring legal consideration. She also
leads the Society’s activities with the Department of Health, and devolved administrations, in the work
to secure independent prescribing for the profession.
With all that on her plate Pip has no spare time, but if she did you would find her by some scenic UK
beachside coastline reading a book (but not a law book!)
Mr Alex Flanagan (Clinical research Director: TRB Chemedica UK Ltd)
Viscosupplementation: Current Developments in Physiotherapeutic Practice
Mr Alex Flanagan is the UK Clinical Research Director for TRB Chemedica (UK) Ltd, part of the
Geneva based TRB Chemedica International Group. A highly ethical, innovative, research-based
company, TRB Chemedica are specialists in bio-synthetic Hyaluronic Acid (HA) derived products.
Alex, a psychology graduate with post graduate degree in psychopharmacology, joined the
pharmaceutical industry in 1996. He worked for a number of international pharmaceutical companies
in both marketing and drug development, and joined TRBC in 2003.
He is responsible for generating and monitoring research material pertinent to the Company’s product
portfolio, usually in partnership with medical establishments or individual clinicians. He speaks
regularly at Orthopaedic Congresses and Musculoskeletal seminars in the UK and Europe,
presenting current data on Viscosupplementation in degenerative joint disease, and post-operative
applications for Sodium Hyaluronate. He also contributes towards a number of post-graduate
physician and physiotherapist injection training courses on the theory of Viscosupplementation.
Femke Nauschutz (Extended Scope Practitioner/ACPOMIT Chairperson)
Research Presentation: Blind or Guided?
Femke graduated from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa in 1992. She arrived in the UK
in 2000 and has since obtained a postgraduate diploma in Orthopaedic Medicine and a qualification
in Injection Therapy. She completed her MSc in Sports & Exercise Injury Management at Leeds
Metropolitan University in 2010.
Since 2 years Femke has been working as an Extended Scope Practitioner in Upper Limb at North
Tees & Hartlepool NHS trust, and has her own private practice. She is currently chair of
ACPOMITand teaches Taping courses throughout the UK.
Prior to working in the NHS, she worked a Clinical Specialist in a Sports Injuries Clinic at Durham
University.
