Judging starts at 10am prompt.
Class 1. CUMBRIA MEMBERS CLASS.
Open to Single, pair, tandem or team driven to suitable and well maintained vehicle which can be either a
traditional type vehicle or exercise vehicle. Hackney show wagons are not eligible. This class may be split if
sufficient entries. The exhibitor must be a Cumbria BDS member.
Class 2. NON-HACKNEY TYPE PRIVATE DRIVING CLASS. OR * (b) (c) (e) (f) (g) (h)
Open to Single, pair, tandem or team unless where specified the best horse(s)/pony(ies) irrespective of size,
correctly and smartly harnessed to a sound, suitable and well maintained traditional type vehicle, suitable for
a competent whip to drive on the road; Hackney show wagons, trade turnouts and vehicles with pneumatic
tyres are not eligible. This class may be split if sufficient entries.
Class 3. HACKNEY TYPE PRIVATE DRIVING CLASS. OR * (a) (s)
Open to Single, pair, tandem or team unless where specified the best horse(s)/pony(ies) irrespective of size,
correctly and smartly harnessed to a sound, suitable and well maintained traditional type vehicle, suitable for
a competent whip to drive on the road; Hackney show wagons, trade turnouts and vehicles with pneumatic
tyres are not eligible. This class may be split if sufficient entries.
Class 4.WORLD AND RARE BREEDS DRIVING CLASS.
Open to a single, pair or tandem that is of a breed that originated outside the United Kingdom or Ireland OR
a breed of horse/pony registered with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust driven to a suitable vehicle. All
horses/ponies to be registered pure-bred.
Class 5 EXERCISE CLASS. OR * (l) (m)
Open to Single, pair, tandem or team driven to a vehicle used for daily exercise. Lamps need not be carried.
Horses/ponies must be 4 years old and over. Pneumatic (specifically designed for carriages i.e. not car tyres)
or traditional wheels permitted. This class may be divided according to entries.
Class 6 NOVICE TURNOUTS.
Open to novice horses/ponies not to have won a 1st prize in either an exercise or private driving class before
1st January of the current year. Horses/ponies must be 4 years old and over driven to a suitable vehicle.
CHAMPIONSHIP 1ST & 2ND PRIZE WINNERS IN CLASSES 1-6 INCLUSIVE TO COMPETE.

Class 7 CONCOURS d’ELEGANCE SWEEPSTAKE.
Entries taken on the day and is open to any turnout already entered in a previous class.
£10 cash entry fee payable in the collecting ring winner to receive total entry money received
Open to singles, pairs or tandems driven to a traditional or traditional-type vehicle. NO
CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 10 YEARS MAY RIDE AS PASSENGERS.
The essence of the class is the word ‘elegance’ and the winner will be the turnout which, in
the opinion of the Judge, presents the most elegant effect. To include vehicle, horse, driver,
passenger etc. but above all the general impression. Attention may be paid to drivers’/
passengers’ personal attire but fancy dress or period costume is definitely barred. The whole
object of the class is to establish which turnout presents the most pleasing picture and normal
judging criteria does not apply. It is judged from a distance and vehicles are NOT closely
inspected. Young drivers (i.e. under 18 years old) must be accompanied by a competent, experienced adult
groom aged 18 years or over at all times.
These * classes are a qualifier for the 2014 Osborne Refrigerators BDS National Championships. The
highest placed turnout owned and driven by a member of the British Driving Society and eligible for the
following Type-section/s disregarding those already qualified down to 6th place in the class will qualify for
the 2014 Semi-finals. The Championship will immediately follow the Semi-Finals.

b) Single non-hackney type (excluding purebred Registered Welsh) – over 13.2hh
c) Single non-hackney type (excluding purebred Registered Welsh) – 13.2hh and under
e) Single purebred Registered Welsh Cob – Section D
f) Single purebred Registered Welsh Ponies – Section C
g) Single purebred Registered Welsh Ponies – Section A & B
h) Single Registered Mountain & Moorland (exc. Purebred reg. Welsh)
l) Single Turnout driven to a two-wheel exercise vehicle
m) Single Turnout driven to a four-wheel exercise vehicle
Entry forms & fees
i) Closing Date of Entries: - Entries must be received no later than 14/07/2014. Post-dated cheques will not
be accepted.
ii) Fees: Classes 1-6 £8 Class 7 £10 entry fee taken on the day.
iii) All exhibitors must be current BDS members.
Health and Safety: Health and Safety standards will be enforced always. All persons on the
showground will be held responsible for complying with these standards at all times and will
not put themselves or any other person at risk in any way whatsoever. Any accidents shall be
reported to the Safety Officer or the Events Secretary at the time of the occurrence. A report shall be
entered into the Accident Report book and the relevant forms completed.

SHOW RULES
APPLICABLE TO ALL EXHIBITORS
1. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
So far as permitted by law the Show Organiser, the Society, its officers, employees and representatives will
not be liable to any person whosoever whilst upon, entering, or leaving the Showground for any loss,
damage, death injury or accident to persons or property or for lost or stolen items.
2. INDEMNITY
Each Exhibitor must keep the Society its officers, employees and representatives fully indemnified against
all losses, actions, costs, claims, demands and expenses arising directly or indirectly out of any act, omission
or negligence by him or by anyone attending the Show in connection with his entry or otherwise expressly
or impliedly with his authority. Therefore all Exhibitors, Competitors and Owners are strongly advised to
take out third-party liability insurance. The Society cannot advise on policies or their suitability and it is the
individual’s responsibility to obtain advice wherever necessary.
3. SAFETY
a) All animals must be under proper control at all times within the Showground.
b) Exhibitors, Owners and Competitors are personally responsible for ensuring that they take all necessary
measures with regard to health and safety.
c) It is recommended that all horseboxes and trailers are fitted with a fire extinguisher of not less than 1kilo
capacity.
d) All dogs must be under proper control at all times within the Showground and must be kept on leads.
4. ENTRIES
a) The Society will not be liable for any error which may appear in any programme or for any entry made in
the wrong class.
b) All entries must be made on an official entry form and are to be sent with the appropriate fees to arrive
with the Secretary on or before the closing date for entries.
c) Exhibitors who cancel their entries will only be refunded their entry fees on production of a valid
veterinary certificate certifying the entered horse/pony is unable to compete on the day of the Show.
d) No substitution or transfer of any entry will be allowed after the closing date for entries. In all cases
horses entered must be named on the entry form and no entry with a general nomination will be accepted.
e) The Society reserves the right to reject or cancel any entry entirely at its discretion and without prior
notice or the need to give any reason for doing so.
f) All horses/ponies entered for the Show must be the bona fide property of a member of The British
Driving Society and driven by a Member of BDS. Exhibitor making an entry shall be deemed to accept and
abide by these Show Rules.
g) No horse, pony, donkey or mule under the age of four years may be entered.
f) All drivers/grooms/passengers under the age of 14 years must wear a hard hat conforming to EN1384
(European Safety Standard), BSEN1384 (British Safety Standard) and PAS 015 standards when in a carriage
or in attendance to a turnout.
6. ORGANISATION AND JUDGING
a) The Area Commissioner reserves the right to appoint such Judges as the Society in its absolute discretion
may decide and to change any Judges without prior notice.
b) The Area Commissioner reserves the right to cancel any class or classes, refunding any fees paid in
respect thereof.
c) The Area Commissioner reserves the right to amend the timing or location of a class, also to introduce
preliminary judging with the highest placed competitors going forward to final judging.
d) Judges’ decisions shall be final and Judges shall not be obliged to explain their decisions or actions nor
enter into correspondence regarding them.
e) Owners will permit random drug/dope tests to be taken from horses/ponies on request by the Area
Commissioner.

f) Turnouts which, in the opinion of a Judge, ring steward or other official of the Society, represent a safety
risk, or potential hazard must leave the showring immediately upon request.
g) Any competitor whose conduct is, in the opinion of a Judge, inappropriate must leave the showring
immediately upon request.
h) If a turnout is not present in the showring when required, it will be subject to disqualification at the
discretion of the Judge
8. PRIZES
a) The method of awarding prize money if any will be made in the show ring.
9. PROTESTS AND DISPUTES
a) Any exhibitor wishing to make a protest, in relation to any aspect of the Show, must make the same in
writing to the Show Secretary (and where such protest relates to an animal exhibited or other issue relating
to a Class such protest must be made within 30 minutes of the Class being judged), and deposit the sum of
£20.00 in cash which may, at the discretion of the Show Committee, be forfeited to the funds of the Society
if the objection is disallowed.
b) Any protest shall be decided by the Show Committee, of which a quorum of three members shall be
required and, if necessary, the Chairman of the Show Committee shall have a casting vote. The decision of
the Show Committee shall be final and it shall not be obliged to explain its decisions or enter into
correspondence regarding them.
c) All disputes regarding these Rules or their interpretation shall be referred to the Area Commissioner,
whose decision shall be final.
12. CLASSIFICATIONS
a) A novice horse/pony means an animal which has not won a First Prize or a First Prize Rosette, in harness,
prior to 1st January in the year of the Show.
b) A Traditional Vehicle means a vehicle of traditional profile and identifiable type to resemble the design
of a carriage built prior to the First World War. The vehicle may be made from modern materials but must
have traditional style springing and carriage lamps.
13. GROOMS
Grooms must be not less than 10 years old on the day of the Show and of a competence in keeping with the
turnout concerned.
14. DRIVERS
Drivers must be aged 10 years or over on the day of the show at which they are to compete. A driver under
the age of 18 must be accompanied in the vehicle by a competent and responsible person aged 18 years or
over, a “responsible adult”. Proof of age will be required if necessary. It is the responsibility of the
owner/driver (if over 18) or (if the owner/driver is under 18) the responsible adult to ensure that his/her
groom/s is/are competent for the purpose of attending to the turnout and aged 10 or over on the day of the
show. When in the vehicle grooms, passenger/s and driver must have their feet firmly on the floor of the
vehicle or use a suitable fixed footrest. This regulation applies at all times and in all areas on the
showground. Any dispute as to a person’s age or the age of an animal shall be determined in the absolute
discretion of the relevant Judge where the dispute arises in relation to a particular class, and by the Area
Commissioner in other instances. The Judge’s or Area Commissioner’s decision is final.
