Thomas’ father, John Flanagan, enlists in the Union Army and leaves young Thomas alone to fend for
himself in the Baltimore Hotel. According to family stories, the woman who owned the hotel kept an
eye on him and made sure he had enough to eat. NOTE: I have Civil War pension records for John and
his son Thomas that I need to incorporate in their family group sheets

NOTE: There is an age discrepancy in Thomas’ enlistment record. According to family lore, and
corroborated by this enlistment record, he lied about his age (17) to the enlistment officer.
