The Sustainability Specialist helps identify and develop innovative
approaches to achieving the University of California's system-wide
sustainability goals and provides support, facilitation, change
management strategies, and coordination of research and
analysis in cooperation with other UC Office of the President (UCOP)
staff and campus stakeholders.
The Sustainability Specialist helps facilitate and coordinate systemwide
working groups that focus on implementing system-wide sustainability
goals, helps to identify best practices, and works to aid adoption and
implementation of those best practices University-wide.
Position Summary
The Sustainability Specialist monitors and analyzes state and federal
legislation and regulations related to sustainability in general, and in
climate change, green building, water conservation, and clean energy
requirements in particular. The incumbent assists in establishing,
updating, and implementing University policy in these areas, often
leading these efforts.
The Sustainability Specialist must have knowledge and experience in all
aspects of sustainability, especially in climate action, green building,
water management and clean energy, in order to act as a resource to
UC's campuses, medical centers, and national
laboratories. The incumbent must develop and maintain a working
knowledge of the ratings and certifications that underpin the guidelines
in the UC Policy on Sustainable Practices, and must keep current on
sustainability trends, issues, and best practices.
The Sustainability Specialist conducts independent research, analysis,
coordination, and reporting on a wide variety of issues relating to
sustainability, and prepares and presents reports to campus leadership,
UCOP leadership, and other groups as required on evolving issues and
guidelines in UC sustainability initiatives. The incumbent serves
as a liaison with administrators and staff at UCOP, the campuses,
medical centers, national laboratories, and governmental agencies,
helping to establish goals and developing promulgating and acting as a
resource in implementing sustainability initiatives. In addition, the
Specialist leads the accountability reporting including collecting data,
assessing achievement, and preparing reports.

Initiative, and other new sustainability
initiatives as they are developed.
Keeps current on sustainability trends, issues, and best practices.
Identifies, develops, and facilitates implementation of complex systemwide initiatives and
projects.
Helps plan, develop and implement programs, tools, and policy to ensure sustainability in
University building design, construction and operations.

Coordinates and facilitates various Sustainability Working Groups,
including: development and implementation of new initiatives; identifying and aiding in
dissemination and adoption of best practices; and identifying and facilitating removal of
impediments to progress toward the University's sustainability goals.
Performs financial analysis for climate, energy, and water planning and
implementation.
Prepares case study reports on sustainability best practices from
throughout the UC system.
Supports sustainability efforts and initiatives internal to UC Office of the President.
Facilitates planning and coordination of meetings conferences and
trainings.
Maintains a working knowledge of the ratings, certifications, and
regulations that underpin guidelines in the UC Policy on Sustainable
Practices, including:
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating
systems
The Climate Registry's reporting protocol
American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment
(ACUPCC) reporting requirements
California Air Resources Board's (CARB) and the Environmental
Protection
Agency's (EPA) reporting requirements

Manages content and format of the UC sustainability website.
Represents the UC system at conferences and presentations regarding
efforts and achievements in sustainability.

LEED-EBOM, and other sustainability initiatives
Serves as the lead author of the annual sustainability report and facilitates the production of
that report.

achievements.
Monitors and reports on UC compliance with requirements of ACUPCC
In collaboration with the California State University and California
Community College systems, develops a conference program
incorporating sustainability trends and best practices for the annual
California Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC).

Manages the annual CHESC Best Practice Awards program.
Plans, organizes, and chairs the annual California Higher Education
Sustainability Officers Professional Development Workshop.
Prepares and presents training sessions, and workshops for UC campus
staff on sustainable topics.

Masters degree in sustainability management, environmental policy, engineering or architecture
or a closely related field and minimum 3 years experience; OR, a Bachelor's degree and equivalent
experience/training in environmental science, architecture, or engineering and minimum 10 years
experience.
Minimum 3 years of experience and demonstrated knowledge in the area of environmental
sustainability and policy, especially in the areas of climate action, green building, and water
management.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain working relationships at all levels of the
organization, across campuses and external institutions and agencies.
Demonstrated experience starting new sustainability initiatives.
An understanding of organizational behavior and cultural transformation.
Change management skills and experience.
Proven ability to organize collected information, extract pertinent data, prepare reports in various
formats to present data effectively, and draft formal written narratives and documents.
Required
Superior communication skills - written, verbal and interpersonal.
Excellent leadership and facilitation skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of general sustainability concepts and best practices, including
greenhouse gas emissions reporting protocols, all LEED rating systems, etc.
Demonstrated project management skills.
Motivated and able to work independently or under supervision.
Ability to prioritize workload and identify resources to perform the responsibilities of this position.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, database programs and management.
Masters degree in sustainability management, environmental policy, engineering or architecture
or a closely related field and minimum 5 years experience.
Related experience in higher education.
LEED accredited professional.
