Background & Purpose
The context of these scholarships is PFLAG’s mission to promote “the health and wellbeing of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) people, through support to
cope with adversity in our society; education to enlighten the public; and advocacy to
end discrimination and secure civil rights.”
The scholarship program is designed to (1) recognize outstanding LGBT and Ally
students whose personal qualities and actions are consistent with PFLAG’s mission and
to (2) encourage and support LGBT and Ally students in furthering their educational
goals and careers.
Eligibility



Self-identified as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, or straight ally student.
On track to graduate by June 2014 from a recognized secondary school in Placer County.
Has applied, or intends applying, to enter higher education (college, university, or a
trade/technical school) by fall 2014.
Application Requirements



Copy of current high school transcript or equivalent document
Two letters of recommendation - (1) a high school teacher or staff member, and (2) an
unrelated adult friend or member of the community. Both letters should attest to the
applicant’s character, academic potential, and positive involvement in concerns related to
justice and equality for the LGBT community. Letters must include writers’ name, phone
number, and relationship to the applicant.
Essay - 250 words (minimum) to 500 words (maximum); type written; double spaced.
To include, but not limited to, applicant’s vocational/career goals, interests and hobbies,
extra-curricular activities, evidence of support for justice and equality for LGBT persons
and community. Please include also either (1) how being an LGBT person has affected
your life, or (2) how being a straight ally and LGBT supporter has affected your life.
Scholarship Awards
Two to four scholarships are available, ranging from $500 to $1,000 each. Applicants
will receive official notification between April 14-18, 2014. Awards will be presented at
the PFLAG Chapter meeting in Auburn on Monday evening, May 12. Proof of
acceptance and enrollment in a college, university, or trade/technical school will be
required prior to the disbursement of funds.
Application Process
Submit applications in a single envelope, postmarked by March 29, 2014, and mail to
