Year 10 Triple Science – Biology, Chemistry and Physics Revision Your child will be taking exams in Units 1, 2 and 3 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in May/June 2016. This may seem like a long time away but students should be reviewing and revising their work throughout the course. There will be end of topic tests and half-term tests. In addition at the end of Year 10 there will be a big exam which will resemble a whole GCSE Unit 1 paper and will also include some questions from Unit 2. The topics are as below for Year 10: Science Biology Chemistry Physics Unit 1 Diet, exercise and how do our bodies defend themselves against diseases. Nerves and hormones. Use and abuse of drugs. Adaptations and environmental changes. Energy and biomass in food chains. Decay and the carbon cycle. Variation and reproduction Evolution Atoms, the periodic table and chemical reactions. Limestone and building materials. Extracting metals, alloys and properties of metals. Crude oil and fuels. Useful substances from crude oil. Plant oils and their uses. Changes in the Earth and its atmosphere. Infrared radiation, kinetic theory, heat transfer and insulating buildings. Energy transfer and efficiency. Power, energy and cost. Methods of generating electricity. Waves – light, sound and electromagnetic, red-shift. Unit 2 Cells, specialised cells and diffusion. Animal and plant organs. Photosynthesis. Distribution of organisms and quadrats. Structure and bonding. Properties and uses of materials including ionic, covalent, metallic, polymers and nanotechnology. Atomic structure, analysing substances, quantitative chemistry and reversible reactions. Resultant forces, acceleration, braking, terminal velocity and elasticity. Kinetic energy of speeding up and slowing down including momentum. Sources of revision: Exercise books Text book Tests and targeted areas from lessons Revision guides available from the Science department. £2.75 for each Science. BBC bitesize: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/subjects/zrkw2hv Class tasks. Home revision: individual and group. AQA website for past papers: http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/gcse Use computer, mobile or tablet to view: http://www.my-gcsescience.com/ Doddle.com- assignments set by teachers Pupils need to focus chiefly on four areas: Subject knowledge and understanding of topics listed above – they may need to apply their knowledge to new situations or circumstances. Exam technique skills – exam command words are covered in lessons: http://filestore.aqa.org.uk/subjects/AQA-GCSE-SCIENCE-COMMAND-WORDS.PDF Literacy - students need to answer longer response questions e.g. Quality of Written Communication questions are worth 6 marks. Students will also need to use specific keywords and learn definitions. Numeracy – students will need to be able to interpret data from tables and graphs as well as drawing their own. They will also need to carry out some calculations in each paper. Equipment – in order to be fully prepared for their lessons and exams students will need: Stationery – pens (black ink), pencil, eraser, sharpener and ruler. Calculator.- (these can be used in all tests and exams) All of the above are covered in lessons BUT they need to be reinforced independently by pupils, ideally with your support. Should you have any questions then please contact your child’s relevant teacher.
