SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Anatomy & Physiology Physics Advanced Chemistry Advanced Biology Chemistry Biology Standards Science Physical Science PHYSICAL SCIENCE - Physical Science is a required science course for all students. The subject matter covered includes sections of Chemistry and Physics and their relationship to topics in earth and space science. BIOLOGY - This course is designed to develop an understanding of the students' place in the world of life. The approach used will involve techniques and methods that help students understand how biological concepts are applied to the students' lives. Many hands-on and group activities will be used to strengthen discovery and understanding of the required concepts. Biology, the study of life, will include a range of concepts from ecology to matter and energy. ADVANCED BIOLOGY - Advanced Biology will introduce special topics in botany, zoology, cell biology, ecology, and anatomy and physiology. This class will also provide the student the opportunity to perform existing labs and also to develop research projects in areas of interest. This is a FULL year course, no ½ credit given. CHEMISTRY - The learner will be able to work effectively both independently and in small groups to analyze, synthesize, and communicate both written and orally the composition, structure, and properties of substances and the changes they undergo. This course uses both lecture and laboratory settings to instruct the learner in chemistry principles. Topics covered are: laboratory techniques and safety, metric system, matter and energy, atomic structure, periodicity, ionic and covalent compounds, chemical equations, stoichiometry, gas laws, 16 solutions, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, and reaction rates. Prerequisite- Algebra 1 with a grade of C or better, English 1 & 2, Physical Science and enrollment in Biology. ADVANCED CHEMISTRY - The learner will study the structure of matter, states of matter, reactions, and descriptive chemistry in a classroom and laboratory setting in order to gain dual college credit with ICC (requires student to pay tuition). This course reviews some concepts of Chemistry and continues that study in more detail. Some of the topics covered include: Laboratory techniques and safety, Metric system, Atomic structure, Stoichiometry, Chemical reactions, Gases, Thermochemistry, Periodicity, Bonding solutions, Chemical kinetics, Chemical equilibrium, Acids and bases, Entropy, Spontaneity, Electrochemistry, Nuclear stability, Transition metals, and Organic molecules. Prerequisites include Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Algebra I and II (both with grades of C or better) with enrollment in Trigonometry or Pre-Calculus recommended, English I, II, and enrollment in III or IV. Is a FULL year course. PHYSICS - The learner will gain knowledge of the basic concepts of physical laws and develop criticalthinking and process skills, which are essential to full participation in a society that is technology based and constantly changing. This course uses both lecture and lab settings to teach basic laws of physical science using mathematics as a communication language. Topics covered: Laboratory safety, metric system, Motion(velocity acceleration) ,vector addition, Forces, Forces and motion, Universal Gravitation, Momentum and Conservation, Energy, Simple machines, Thermal energy, States of Matter, Waves, Sound, Light, Reflection, Refraction, Mirrors and Lenses, Electricity. Prerequisite- Algebra1 and II(with grades of C or better), with enrollment in Trigonometry or Pre-Calculus strongly encouraged. English 1, 2 and 3, Physical Science, and Biology. STANDARDS SCIENCE- This course is designed as a comprehensive science credit for students that have completed the freshman science and biology courses. The curriculum for this course will be created from the state standards and will include units in both physical and life sciences. Grades 11 and 12. ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY- This class is a dual credit course through Independence Community College. Areas that will be covered include the nervous system, muscular system, skeletal system, digestive system, urinary system, respiratory system, and the cardiovascular system. This class requires permission from the instructor in order to be enrolled. Prerequisite courses include: 17
