Notes:
To gain control of Africa’s resources, and also because of racism
and religion
The Europeans partitioned Africa according to the resources that
Europe desired, and did not ask the Africans or give any
consideration to the people.
The Europeans divided some ethnic groups into separate colonies,
and placed some ethnic groups together that should not have been
together.
Colonialism is being controlled by another country- being
independent means each country makes their own decisions
The ethnic groups fighting each other
Pan Africanism is the idea that all ethnic groups are equal, and that
all people of African decent should work together to end the
conflicts.
The ANC was a group formed to protest the apartheid, and their
goal is to unite all Africans regardless of race.
The apartheid was legal racism separation in South Africa, which
began during the time of European colonialism. It continued after
independence until the 1990s.
F. W. Klerk was the president of South Africa, who was white. He
freed Nelson Mandela from prison and worked with him to end the
apartheid. Mandela, a black man, had been imprisoned for 25
years for opposing the apartheid. He later became the president
after Klerk, making him the first black president of S. Africa.
Together, they won the Nobel Peace prize for ending the apartheid.
