Course Description: Math 78E is designed to introduce students to concepts in intermediate algebra. After this course, student will be able to: classify a decimal number as rational or irrational evaluate polynomial expressions, if give rational values for variables (Section 12.2) determine the function value for a given input value, if given a function in the form of a graph, list or formula (Section 15.1). determine if a relation is a function, a graph or list (Section 15.1). determine the domain of a function, if given a function in the form of a graph, list or formula (Section 15.1). determine the range of a function, if given a function in the form of a graph, list or formula (Section 15.1). classify a function as linear, quadratic, exponential, or logarithmic, if given a function in the form of a graph, list or formula determine the input values that map to a given value in the range, if given a function in the form of a graph, list or formula (not in the textbook). solve exponential equations (Sections 19.2 & 19.5). answer questions about applications with an exponential model (Section 19.2). answer questions about applications with a logarithmic model (Section 19.3). compute the natural domain of a logarithmic function (Section 19.3). use properties of logarithms to simplify logarithmic expressions (Section 19.4). solve logarithmic equations (Section 19.5). solve equations involving e and natural logarithms (Section 19.5). convert between exponential and logarithmic notation (Section 19.5).
