Songs & Rhymes – Lesson 3 – Humpty Dumpty
Learning Outcome:
Students will be able to sing Humpty Dumpty and understand that he was an egg.
Students will know that eggs come from chickens and understand the properties of an egg.
Some students will see the humour in the other versions.
Introduction to Topic:
Draw an oval shape on the board. Ask students what shape it is and to guess what you are
drawing. If they don’t guess “egg”, draw a chicken, fried egg etc. until they can. Draw a face on
the oval, add hair, arms & legs. Ask students if they know who this is. If they can’t guess, add
a wall and give clues until they do!
Sing the first verse once through and then again adding actions – get students to role play
(cushion for the wall). Teacher Resource 1 – first rhyme with pictures.
After sequencing activity or in second part of lesson:
Start a dialogue about what happened to Humpty – Teacher Resource 2.
If appropriate, get an egg and talk about the shape and the shell. Let students hold it and
shake it gently so they can feel that there is something inside. Ask students what is inside.
Discuss what type of eggs students like to eat. Talk about where eggs come from (chickens).

Humpty Dumpty – other versions
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the King's horses and all the King's men
said, "OH NO!
Not scrambled eggs for dinner again."
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
Along came the children with paper and glue
And stuck him together as good as new.
Chick Chick Chicken
Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken,
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king's horses and all the king's men
...trod on him!
Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
He didn't get bruised, he didn't get bumped
Humpty Dumpty bungee jumped!
Humpty Dumpty sat on the chair
While the barber cut his hair
Lay a little egg for me.
Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken,
I want one for my tea.
I haven't had an egg since breakfast,
And now it's half past three.
So, chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken,
Lay a little egg for me.
Higgledy Piggledy
Higgledy Piggledy,
My black hen,
She lays eggs
He cut it long, he cut it short
He cut it with a knife and fork
For gentlemen;
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
And sometimes ten,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
Higgledy Piggledy,
When his mum found him and asked him,
My black hen!
Sometimes nine,
“WHY?”
Humpty replied "I thought I could fly"
Humpty Dumpty opened his eyes
(Falling down was such a surprise)
Then Humpty Dumpty counted to ten
And climbed back up on the wall again.
