SOL-BASED ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR 4TH GRADE PETER FRANCISCO SOIL & WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT Contact Elise Corbin, elise.corbin@vaswcd.org 434-983-7923 - Icky Sticky Ooo (Science 4.1) Students will measure and mix ingredients to make their own goop, clay dough, floam and flubber. - A Landfill is No Dump (Science 4.5f) Students will learn the length of time it takes for different items to decompose and the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling as they create this landfill project. Their mini-landfill will be observed in 10 days and again in 20 days. Worksheets and questions will be provided. - Leaf Identification (Science 4.4) Students will learn leaf terms and use a leaf key to identify 13 different leafs. If leaves are available can do leaf printing, silhouettes, imprinting or rubbing, or sorting using characteristics. - Gyotaku – The Japanese Art of Fish Painting (Science 4.1, English 4.5) Gyotaku was developed more than a century ago as a Japanese fisherman’s method of recording the size and species of his catch. Students will learn its history as they observe the differences in fish and make their own fish prints listening to Traditional Japanese music. The Haiku art form will be introduced. - Name that Rock! (Science 4.9) Students will learn some fascinating facts about rocks and minerals. They will visit several stations to observe igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. A magnifying glass and list of questions will be provided at each station to aid the student in their observations as they play Name that Rock. - Pollinators – Our Local Heroes (Science 4.4) Students will learn the basic parts of a plant and the role that bees, bats, beetles, butterflies, hummingbirds and bats play in plant reproduction. Students will make their own cootie catcher. - Planting the Easy Way and Plant/Flower Jeopardy (Science 4.4) Great ideas for planting using recycled materials will be demonstrated. Then students will divide into groups and play Jeopardy. Questions include flower parts and life cycle of plants. - Virginia Geography Jeopardy (VS 2) Students will divide into groups and play Jeopardy. Questions are about Virginia’s geography. - All the Water in the World – Who Polluted the River? (Science 4.9a and VS.5) Students participate in an interactive story during the Revolutionary War era dramatizing how a body of water becomes polluted.
