Circle of Leadership Academy Graduation Celebration
November 7th, 2013 at A’BULAE – St. Paul, MN

Join us in celebration and in of support our Circle of Leadership Academy (CoLA) program on Nov. 7th, 2013 from
6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at A’BULAE in the Lowertown district of St. Paul, MN. We will be congratulating 26 dynamic
Native men and women for their completion of the program, as well as recognizing program alumni from our past
two cohorts. The CoLA is an 18-month professional development program designed to enhance and empower
Native leadership in the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors. The programs’ mission is to strengthen and sharpen the
necessary skills to be an effective leader in Native communities through training seminars, webinars, distance
learning and mentoring opportunities.

The Pueblos of the Southwest By Robert Sturm, NAP SW RAN Weaver
Over the past year and a half, NAP has brought on Regional Action Network (RAN) Weavers to help our work reach
more deeply and effectly into our seven different regions. Part of their work is creating hubs of Native philanthropy
in their local communities and helping keep NAP as a national organization in tune with the work that is happening
and needs to happen across the country. We have asked our RAN Weavers to share with our members, partners, and
allies news and stories to build and cultivate connections. In this newsletter, our Southwest RAN Weaver Robert
Sturm has written an article on the Pueblos of the Southwest. The article is a brief introduction to Pueblo cultures
and history.
The pueblo people have lived in what is now the American Southwest for thousands of years and some of their
villages have been inhabited for centuries. Although the pueblos share some cultural and life practices, their
populations represent a number of distinct linguistic and cultural groups. Continue reading…

The California Wellness Foundation’s Christina Regalado steps down as Vice President of Programs
Cristina M. Regalado has announced her departure as vice president of programs of The California Wellness
Foundation (TCWF). Her last day at the Foundation is August 16, 2013. Fatima Angeles, TCWF director of
evaluation and organizational learning has been appointed interim vice president of programs. Read more here…
The Physics of LGBTQ Funding finds “both a grave danger to and a grand opportunity for LGBTQ
philanthropy.”
Funders for LGBTQ Issues today released a new report that explores how funding for LGBTQ issues has grown
over the past 10 years and offers some strategies for further expanding LGBTQ philanthropy at this crucial moment
for the LGBTQ movement. Download the report
WKKF to invest $5M for family engagement innovations
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) has announced a $5 million investment to identify and cultivate innovations
in the growing field of family engagement. The goal is to remove barriers faced by low-income families and support

Notah Begay III Foundation Announces Launch of New National Initiative Expanded Research, Grantmaking
and Advocacy Mark Next Step in NB3F Mission
The Notah Begay III Foundation (NB3F) has announced it will launch a new national initiative to expand its fight
against childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes for Native American children. Plans include leading extensive
research and advocacy initiatives while assisting more Native American communities in developing their own
evidence-based health and wellness programs, was made possible through a generous $1.5 million grant to NB3F

A Sad Day for African Development Center
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we send this email to inform you that our Founder and Leader, Hussein
Samatar, passed away from complications of his battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Hussein was a
courageous and dedicated public servant, and will be missed by many – well beyond those who have benefited from
his ambitious initiatives here at ADC, the Minneapolis School Board, and throughout the community. Read

The Power of a Dream
In early August, D5’s Kelly Brown joined Brickson Diamond (Executive Leadership Council) and Shirley Marcus
Allen (Venture Philanthropy Partners) as a featured guest at The Power of a Dream: Diversity in Philanthropy
hosted by INROADS to mark the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. Panelists engaged in a lively
discussion on the value proposition of diversity in philanthropic decision-making for an audience of corporate
