Conference Synopsis
Veterinary Advances in Animal Health and Welfare Research – Impact
and Opportunities
February 20th - 24th, 2014
With the growing demand for food, the international livestock sector is expanding at an
unparalleled rate, driven by a combination of population growth, rising incomes in
emerging markets and urbanization. Alongside this, is a developing global awareness
of the concept of animal welfare and the interaction between poor standards of animal
welfare, reduced animal productivity and associated problems with public health.
Meeting future demand for safe, sustainable and affordable livestock products and
raising standards of animal health and welfare are therefore a high priority, along with
preventing the development of infectious diseases in humans stemming from animals
as a consequence of encroachment into wildlife areas, increases in the numbers of
companion animals and more intensive livestock production shifting into areas of higher
human population density. India’s veterinarians play a pivotal role in the adoption of
good practices to help improve food safety and quality, reduce the risk of zoonotic
disease, and improve standards of animal health and welfare.
This international conference will bring together experts from the Commonwealth
Veterinary Association, the University of Edinburgh’s Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary
Studies including the world famous Roslin Institute, Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and
Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar and National Institute of Animal Nutrition and
Physiology, Bangalore ,along with other Indian Veterinary researchers, Animal
Scientists and government policy makers involved in the field of animal health and
welfare, to discuss opportunities for:

Using new technologies for improving animal resistance to disease,

Enhancing sustainable animal productivity,

Identifying new and emerging zoonoses,

Understanding how pathogens might cross from animals to humans

Satellite Conferences and Workshops
‘Progress in Animal Welfare’ and ‘Canine Rabies Control’
February 22nd and 24th
Two satellite conferences, ‘Animal Welfare’ and ‘Canine Rabies Control’, will follow the
main conference.
The Commonwealth Veterinary Association in association with the University of
Edinburgh’s Jeanne Marchig International Centre for Animal Welfare Education will hold
a Satellite Conference on Animal Welfare to provide an opportunity for the various
specialists, who will be participating in the main conference, to share their experience
and expertise and also address issues of importance in the Indian subcontinent (India,
Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan). This will
include topics such as implementation of animal welfare education programmes in the
Veterinary Curricula of Veterinary Institutions, as well as discussing the recent research
in animal welfare on issues such as transport and slaughter. The implementation of OIE
standards, especially those adopted for Stray Dog Control, the Use of Animals in
Research and Education, and broiler chicken production plus the standard being
developed for dairy production will also be discussed.
The Commonwealth Veterinary Association in collaboration with Association for
Prevention and Control of Rabies in India, is proud to present the Canine Rabies
Control satellite Conference. With the establishment of a dedicated Rabies Diagnostic
Laboratory at Bangalore by CVA, Crucell and Bangalore Veterinary University,
advances in Rabies diagnosis and control have been initiated especially the use of
Monoclonal antibodies as replacement of Rabies immunoglobulin. Dogs being the main
source of transmission of Rabies, the control of Rabies through dog population
management is a high priority and latest techniques of dog sterilization such as use of
immuno-contraceptives will be discussed. Training in Rabies diagnosis is of great
importance and the use of Direct Rapid Immunohistochemistry Test and other
technologies for rapid diagnosis is becoming more and more relevant. The workshop
aims to train laboratory workers and veterinarians from the Indian subcontinent in the
latest technologies used for Rabies diagnosis and control.
