Enrichment Course Descriptions Spring 2012 Instructor: Soccer & Smiles Course Title: Soccer! Grade level: Preschool/Pre-K Day/Time: Mondays, 11:30-12:30 Course description: Designed specifically for children ages 3-8, Soccer & Smiles strives to teach the fundamentals of soccer in a fun, positive, non-competitive environment. Children will develop a wide range of cognitive abilities including increased self-confidence, problemsolving skills, concentration, cooperation, and independence. Our program also enhances gross motor skills, encourages regular exercise and promotes a happy and healthy lifestyle. Instructor: Gold Medal Martial Arts Course Title: Taekwondo Grade level: K-4 Day/Time: Tuesdays, 3:10-3:55 Course description: The program is based upon building real skills through “FUNdamental” drills. Coordination, balance, and motor skills are carefully cultivated and nurtured by caring instructors. The skills your child will develop in our program will enhance all aspects of their development - socially, academically and athletically. This program builds the foundation for meeting the requirements of Black Belt in the Olympic sport and martial art of Taekwondo. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Instructor: Amanda Poon Course Title: Music Enjoyment Grade level: Preschool/Pre-K Day/Time: Wednesdays, 11:30-12:30 Course description: This class is designed specifically for preschool-aged children. The class is structured so that the first 40-minutes emphasize the Kodaly, Orff and Dalcroze methods, followed by a 20-minute chorus class. Children will learn to appreciate music through their class participation. Class size is limited to 10 children. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Instructor: Robin Long Course Title: Make Your Own Stained Glass! Grade level: Middle School Day/Time: Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30 Course description: Design and produce works in stained glass. This is a goggles-wearing opportunity! Learn how to use a glass cutter and soldering iron. Depending on complexity, you may be able to create more than one piece. A materials fee of $35 (included in cost of the class) will cover the costs of creating as many pieces as you are able to make in the 8 weeks. Instructor: Play-Well Teknologies Course Title: Lego Engineering FUNdamentals Grade level: K-4 Day/Time: Thursdays, 3:10-4:10 Course description: Power up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and over 100,000 pieces of LEGO®! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as arch bridges, skyscrapers, motorized cars, and the Battletrack! Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level. Instructor: Soccer & Smiles Course Title: Soccer Skills Clinic Grade level: Kindergarten Day/Time: Thursdays, 2:40-3:40 Course description: Designed specifically for children ages 3-8, Soccer & Smiles strives to teach the fundamentals of soccer in a fun, positive, non-competitive environment. Children will develop a wide range of cognitive abilities including increased self-confidence, problemsolving skills, concentration, cooperation, and independence. Geared toward older children, this class will build upon children’s soccer knowledge and enhance their skills. Each hour long class will end in a 20-minute scrimmage. Instructor: Erin Bassmann Course Title: Cooking Grade level: 3-8 Day/Time: Thursdays, 3:30-4:30 The students will learn to cook fun dishes they can recreate at home, while learning some basic skills that will help them gain an understanding for the foundation of cooking. A materials fee of $30 (included in cost of the class) will cover all supplies Instructor: Bay Area Chess Course Title: Chess Grade level: K-4, 3:10-4:10 Day/Time: Thursdays, 2:40-3:40 Course description: Each session consists of lesson, practice game, and individual coaching. From time to time, students also work on puzzles and exercises to sharpen their mental acuity. The time is roughly split evenly between formal instruction and practicing what you learned.
