All Staff are part of a team of Teaching and Support Staff, bound in common service in the light of Mission Statement and School Improvement Plan. PURPOSE OF POST: To promote and support the spiritual and life and values of the college. To implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum through sustained high quality practice in teaching and learning. To contribute to curriculum delivery which supports personal and academic growth for all students within the context of this Catholic College. To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students as a classroom teacher and form tutor and so contribute to raising standards of student attainment and inclusion. To support systems, structures and policies of the school to ensure good order and the health and safety of students. Undertake the duties of Form Tutor to support learning and contribute pro-actively to the Citizenship and PSHE curriculum. To contribute to the pastoral care of pupils and support their spiritual, social, moral and cultural development and to promote their health and welfare. To comply with the teaching and learning approaches adopted in the subject/pastoral area as directed by the appropriate leader. To adhere to the data/record keeping systems across the college and use appropriate data to inform target setting for individual students. To make effective use of planning, preparation and assessment time (PPA) to plan lessons thoroughly in advance, to record outcomes and to compare and review the performance of pupils with colleagues as appropriate. To incorporate the use of ICT to enhance the delivery of the curriculum. Plan all lessons, differentiating work and materials to meet the educational needs of the pupils’ different abilities. This includes due recognition to provide challenge to all students including those on the Gifted and Talented Register, those with Special Needs and to implement strategy for intervention with pupils whose progress is not matching targets. Use the principles of Assessment for Learning in the development of personalised approaches to learning. Ensure work is marked, assessed and progress recorded appropriately. Provide the curriculum leaders with evidence of planning and assessment of student work as appropriate and contribute to school self review and evaluation processes. Ensure that the development of literacy, numeracy, citizenship and enterprise is established in lesson planning and delivery. Attend Parents’ Meetings, produce accurate reports on all students in the reviewing and reporting to parents processes, meeting deadlines and setting appropriate targets. Support the effective use of Teaching Assistants assigned to work in your lessons. Set regular worthwhile homework tasks to complement classroom learning. Promote adherence to the college’s Behaviour Code, reinforcing this with all classes taught and form tutor groups. Adhere to the college’s procedures to register accurately and codify attendance and absence, and to complete class registers for all groups taught. The College, in close partnership with Bishop Challoner Catholic College in Birmingham, is rapidly achieving its vision and ethos to become a very good school achieving high academic results within a vibrant Catholic School community. We are celebrating a dramatic improvement in GCSE results as 85% of students achieved 5 or more CGSEs at grades A* to C. There has been a huge improvement in the progress made in both English at 75% and Mathematics at 59%. Consequently, the headline figure of 5 or more A* to C grades including English and Mathematics rose by 28% to 57% - the best in the history of the school! The Maths Specialism is a main driver to ensure enjoyment of mathematics across the school and to raise academic standards in this key area. The results this summer reflect the rapid improvement in standards across the Academy since it’s opening and the determination of the whole of the community to make John Henry Newman Catholic College a beacon of excellence in educational improvement and practice. The Specialism of Performing Arts The school places a high value on performance and the celebration of students’ creativity. A thriving Performing and Visual Arts faculty not only offers a platform for the most able but also encourages all students to experience life enhancing opportunities for expression, communication and diverse cultural enrichment. The Art work produced by the students is truly stunning and reflects the major talent that exists within the school. The school is building links with local and national providers of the Arts to extend the horizons of the students. Bishop Challoner Catholic College is supporting John Henry Newman Catholic College to significantly improve its standard of teaching and learning. It has deployed experienced staff, including senior leaders, curriculum leaders and Advanced Skills Teachers to coach and mentor staff in specific subject departments. There are joint CPD programmes to develop high quality pedagogical practice. In due course, John Henry Newman Catholic College is envisaged as a centre of excellence for teaching and learning, capable of supporting local schools. Governance and Management The Principal is responsible to the Governing Body of John Henry Newman Catholic College. The Principal of Bishop Challoner Catholic College acts as a consultant Principal providing on-going advice and guidance on the strategic direction and development of the new school in its first year or two. The day to day management of the school is the responsibility of the Principal with their Senior Leadership Team, including a Director of Finance and Operations. Working with the Local Community John Henry Newman Catholic College is committed to playing a full part in its local community and beyond to contribute fully to community cohesion. The school is using its Performing Arts specialism and the state of the art facilities, including Theatre, Recording Studio and Dance Studios, to enable it to develop as a key player in the community.
