Spelling Coverage 2014: Year 3
Autumn
1
Week 1: Revision – adding –es to nouns and verbs ending in –y
(The y is changed to I before –es is added flies replies copies babies carries)
Week 2: Revision – adding –ed, -ing, -er and –est to a root word ending in –y with a consonant before it.
(The y is changed to I before –ed, -er and –est are added, but not before –ing as this would result in ii copied
happiest replied copying crying replying)
Week 3: Revision - adding –ed, -ing, -er and –est to a root word ending in –e with a consonant before it.
(The –e at the end of a root word is dropped before –ing, -ed, -er, -est, hiking hiked hiker nicer nicest shiny)
Week 4: Revision - adding –ed, -ing, -er and –est and –y to words of one syllable ending in a single
consonant letter after a single vowel letter.
(The last consonant letter of the root word is doubled to keep the vowel short patting hummed dropped
saddest fattest runny sadder)
Week 5: Revision – contractions

(Before a root word starting with l, in- becomes il illegal illegible)

(Various, serious, obvious, curious, jealous)

(Division, invasion, confusion, decision, collision, television)

Week 1: Adding suffixes beginning with vowel letters to words of more than one syllable
(If the last syllable of a word is stressed and ends with one consonant letter which has forgetting,
forgotten, beginning, gardener, limiting, limitation)

(The apostrophe is placed after the plural form of the word –es is not added if the plural already ends in
–es, but is added if the plural does not end in –s. Note: singular proper nouns ending in an s uses the ‘s
suffix e.g. James’s)
