MAKE UP SESSION #7: GOD WITH US GOAL: The goal of this session is to give the candidates an understanding of the reality that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and the perfect revelation of God. Without this central truth, our profession of faith no longer makes sense. KEY TERMS: 1) Logos – Greek word translated as “Word.” The Logos is the divine Word of God, identified as Christ in the Prologue to the Gospel of John 2) Nature- Human nature, though weakened and wounded through the effects of original sin, still participates in the goodness of God’s created work. Divine nature refers to the one divine essence or substance of the Trinity. KEY CONCEPTS: 1) Jesus Christ is both truly God and truly man. This unity allows Him to be the only mediator between God and humanity. 2) The Incarnation is the central event of human history. In that moment, God took on human flesh in order to save fallen humanity and redeem it from its sins. 3) Christ has won the victory for us over sin and death; because of His death and Resurrection we have abounding grace and life. When our lives come in contact with Christ, they are changed through faith. OPENING PRAYER: Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen. VIDEO TEACHING: LIFE TEEN Video, What if Jesus wasn’t God? What if Jesus wasn’t really God? What if He was just some wise philosopher who had some good ideas? What if He didn’t exist at all? Would it make a difference? It would make an incredible difference. Although some people may say or even believe that Jesus was just another guy or even a fairy tale, it doesn’t change reality. I can believe the sky isn’t blue, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is blue. But what if those people were right? We would have no chance of getting to heaven and reconnecting with God. When we sinned, we would just have to live with it without ever finding forgiveness. We would lose our example of what true love is. The Church would never have existed, which means hospitals, universities, many gains in science, art, philosophy, music, math and history would go away. If Jesus was not God, we have a huge problem because suddenly our lives have no meaning. No direction. We would wind up very lost. Christ is the light of the world; if that light never existed, we remain in darkness. After watching the video, please answer the following questions in three or more sentences. 1) Why is it so important to our world that Jesus is God? How would the world change if He didn’t exist or was just a wise philosopher? 2) How would your world change if Jesus was not God? What things would be different? Would this change be better or worse than your life is now? Why? VIDEO TEACHING: Bob Lesnefsky, The Word Became Flesh After watching the video, please answer the following questions in three or more sentences 1) What does Bob say about why it’s so important to understand that God became man? 2) What are two reasons does Bob says people don’t believe in Jesus’ ability to save them? What are the problems with these reasons? 3) What event happened to Bob that had him reflect on Jesus’ love for us? How did it help him to better understand God’s desire to save all of us? Why is this an important point for understanding our own salvation? 4) Why is the Incarnation the central event of human history? How does Philippians 2:5-11 explain this point? 5) What does it mean that God is love and Jesus is the “good news”? CLOSING PRAYER: As Catholics we know that Jesus is present with us Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity within the Eucharist. These elements are all substantially present within the Eucharistic. We reserve the Eucharist and keep it in the tabernacle so that we can always have a place to pray. This is the same person who healed people 2,000 years ago. Literally, God is among us. During this time of prayer, we invite you to meditate upon the Scripture passages below and ask yourself the question: how do I need Jesus to heal me? An encounter with Christ, whether people believed in Him or not, always changed them. Let your heart be open to Him right now: Read the following Scripture Verses and journal about them in 3 or more sentances Read Luke 17:11-19 What is significant about the number of lepers who come back to Jesus? Do you see any parallels to this story in your world? Why do you think only one leper came back? What made him different? Have your glorified God for the good things He has done for you? How can you be more thankful to God this week? Read Luke 7:36-50 Why do you think the sinful woman risked embarrassment to come and see Jesus? How do the actions of the woman set an example of faith for us? Who do you relate more to in this passage? The woman or Simon? Why? Read Matthew 9:27-31 How do you think the two men were able to have faith, even though they could not see Jesus? Why do you think they came back? Close your time in prayer answering these questions privately with you and Jesus: What in your life do you need Jesus to heal? How would you have answered Jesus’ question?
