Work submitted for exhibition should be the work that is shown in the application. Additional pieces may be added as long as they belong to the same body of work and are consistent in size, style, and media. If you intend to show work other than the slides submitted with this application, you must indicate your intentions in your proposal for the use of the space. The gallery manager reserves the right to approve/disapprove the installation of exhibitions that are inconsistent with material submitted during the application process. Applications remain the property of the Student Space Gallery until the completion of your exhibition. Once your exhibit is over, you may collect your application from the Student Activities Office. Student Space Gallery is not responsible for applications not picked up by the end of the academic year. About the MICA, Student Space Gallery The Student Space Gallery is organized by a committee of MICA undergraduates, and its main purpose is to provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to exhibit their artwork on campus. In addition, the process is intended to emulate and prepare students for a professional gallery experience. Students will be installing their own exhibits; MICA is not responsible for artwork in any gallery space. Judging The slides are reviewed by a panel of MICA undergraduates who have been selected for their ability to evaluate art objectively and to understand and appreciate artistic talent and diversity. The judges are not permitted to submit artwork of their own. Each application is considered individually on the basis of the artwork submitted. The jury, taking into account the student’s requested show dates and location, decides when and where an exhibition will be scheduled. The scheduling decisions are made in consultation with Gerald Ross, Director of Exhibitions at MICA. The Gallery Spaces The Piano Gallery, Meyerhoff House - located on the main level in the Piano Practice Room. This space is intimate, and in a central location that is sure to attract your peers on their way to meals or when they’re hanging out in the Meyerhoff Lounge. The piano adds a nice atmosphere, and you can even consider live music for your opening! These walls CANNOT be painted, and the piano cannot be moved, however. For heavy works, you will most likely need to use hooks and wires to suspend them from the molding. This is an outstanding space for smaller works! The Pinkard Gallery, Bunting Center - located across from the Decker Library. This gallery is located on the first floor in the small room within the larger Pinkard Gallery. This is the only SSG space where the walls CAN be painted. However, you will be responsible for purchasing the paint to change/restore the walls to their original color, in addition to re-painting the gallery. The location of this gallery requires heavy promotion, as it is not centrally located on campus. This space is great for all types of work, especially video/film exhibitions. The Gateway Galleries (1 and 2), Gateway - located on the first floor of the building, outside the BBOX. These spaces are more flexible than meets the eye. You can incorporate pedestals and other structures, and really do some interesting things with the space. The walls in Gallery #2 curve in an interesting way. Do note that UV light comes into the space due to the structure of the building. The walls in these galleries CANNOT be painted or moved. Note: Students may propose their ideas for altering any of these spaces to the Exhibitions department once accepted. All spaces must return back to their original state as part of the student’s deinstallation process. The Exhibitions department will lend advice; however, they will not install the artwork. Students may check out tools through the Exhibitions department with a valid ID. There are also basic installation tool boxes available for shows in the Meyerhoff House and Gateway Galleries which can be checked out in the Student Activities Office. Specific gallery dimensions/diagrams can be downloaded at www.mica.edu/studentactivities
