Email your instructor this document as an attachment. GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is the policy of STC to measure student achievement and to report a student’s performance level for each course attempted or used toward graduation. Every semester you will receive a semester GPA. For this assignment, figure out the following five student’s GPAs. As a reminder, here are the steps for calculating GPA: Step 1: First figure out how many credit hours Course Credit Hours each class is. For academic classes, the number ENGL 1301 3 of credit hours is the second number in the course number (code made up of four letters MATH 1414 4 and four numbers). For developmental classes, ARTS 1301 3 the number of credit hours is NOT reflected as PSYC 2301 3 the second number in the course number. KINE 1102 1 Instead, all developmental courses are three credit hours with a few exceptions: MATH 0100 – worth 4 credit hours MATH 0200 – worth 4 credit hours MATH 0020 – worth 1 credit hour (but cannot be taken alone; must be taken with MATH 1414 which is worth 4 credit hours, resulting in a total of 5 credit hours) Course Grade ENGL 1301 MATH 1414 ARTS 1301 PSYC 2301 KINE 1102 C F B D A Grade Points 2 0 3 1 4 Step 2: Next, figure out how many points the course grade is worth (grade points). Remember that an A is worth 4 points, a B is worth 3 points, a C is worth 2 points, a D is worth 1 point, and an F is worth 0 points. Step 3: Add up the total number of credit hours taken in the given semester. Course ENGL 1301 MATH 1414 ARTS 1301 PSYC 2301 KINE 1102 Totals Credit Hours 3 4 3 3 1 14 credit hours Step 4: For each course taken, multiple the number of credit hours (from Step 1) by the number of points the grade received is worth (from Step 2) to get the total number of grade points earned for each course. Course Grade Credit Hours X ENGL 1301 MATH 1414 ARTS 1301 PSYC 2301 KINE 1102 C F B D A 3 4 3 3 1 x x x x x Grade Points 2 0 3 1 4 Step 5: Add the total number of grade points earned for each course (from Step 4) to get the total grade points for the semester. = = = = = = Total Grade Points 6 0 9 3 4 Course ENGL 1301 MATH 1414 ARTS 1301 PSYC 2301 KINE 1102 Totals Total Grade Points 6 0 9 3 4 22 grade points Step 6: Divide the total grade points for the semester (from Step 5) by the total number of credit hours taken in the given semester (from Step 3). This number reflects the GPA. Course Grade Credit Hours X ENGL 1301 MATH 1414 ARTS 1301 PSYC 2301 KINE 1102 Totals C F B D A - 3 4 3 3 1 14 credit hours x x x x x - Grade Points 2 0 3 1 4 - = = = = = = - Total Grade Points 6 0 9 3 4 22 grade points To get the semester GPA, divide the Total Grade Points by the Total Number of Credit Hours. GPA = 22 Grade Points/14 Credit Hours = 1.57 GPA ACTIVITY BELOW Now, it’s your turn! Calculate the semester GPA for the following five students.
